These settings have given me the experience needed to work with children and adolescents that are experiencing depression, anxiety, low self esteem, and self-harm or
suicidal ideation
.
Does it feel like you or your child lack motivation or self confidence? Does it feel like you or your child are anxious almost all day? Does it feel like you and your child do not communicate? Feeling this way can impact how we feel about ourselves and how we navigate our daily life. Let's work together to overcome these feelings and change this internal dialogue. You should feel comfortable to share these experiences when and how you are ready, I believe the client is the expert in their own life and take this approach in therapy.

The saying, "It is the relationship that heals," is of central focus with my work with clients. I aim to accompany them as they gain insight into their situation and who they are as an individual. This results in added options in managing and enhancing life. We know that problematic areas are multi-determined and multi-layered. Examining and understanding the inter relatedness of all the forces of life allows for overall growth and symptom reduction. This process is a powerful ingredient that spurs lasting change across life stages, relationships and the overall experience of life.

Does your child struggle to manage anxiety or racing thoughts? Have they found it difficult to develop healthy relationships and cope with stress? As children and adolescents grow, therapy can be a beneficial tool to help them learn healthy coping skills and to be able to experience a non-judgmental space where they can freely express themselves. Some children may also need help with processing difficult family dynamics or past childhood trauma.

I specialize in working with people who feel disconnected from themselves. For many reasons, you may have found ways to protect yourself from painful feelings or people who might hurt you, and those protective behaviors may have led you to now feeling disconnected from yourself. I believe that your mental health struggles aren't pathological. What I see is ways you have adapted to survive difficulties in life that have in turn created challenges for you like relationship issues, struggles with emotional intimacy, anxiety and panic attacks, career burnout, and/or using food or alcohol in ways that make you feel ashamed.

I believe in meeting clients where they are at emotionally and helping them and their parents reach their goals. Through a positive relationship with my client I try to help them gain insight into their desire to belong and have significance. I continually work to create a supportive environment for children in order for the child to gain insight and understanding into their unique world. With insight the child and therapist can collaborate to reduce the child's current stressors possibly leading to problematic behaviors.

Life is hard! Whether it be stressors of everyday life, family or marital issues, school or work-related problems or because of recent or past trauma/grief, life can become messy. It gets hard not only for oneself, but also for loved ones or those around us. The reality is it happens to ALL of us. Sometimes all we need is for someone to listen with compassion and without judgment. Sometimes we require resources or coping strategies to help navigate the obstacles life throws at us. No matter what it is we need, therapy is the first step. Therapy equips us with the tools that we need to face whatever hardships we have.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.
Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
