Indeed, we all have hurts that need attention and we do not always know how to do that. I believe we were created for relationships and at times those relationships or how we are going about them can be unhealthy. Due to that, we have adapted and learned coping mechanisms that have allowed us to function and move on. However, those coping mechanisms can stop working after a while and this is what creates an imbalance in our system that we need to make right or it can begin to generate stresses that spill over into other aspects of our lives.

Life is hard! Whether it be stressors of everyday life, family or marital issues, school or work-related problems or because of recent or past trauma/grief, life can become messy. It gets hard not only for oneself, but also for loved ones or those around us. The reality is it happens to ALL of us. Sometimes all we need is for someone to listen with compassion and without judgment. Sometimes we require resources or coping strategies to help navigate the obstacles life throws at us. No matter what it is we need, therapy is the first step. Therapy equips us with the tools that we need to face whatever hardships we have.

Living with your own personal struggles can be defeating. I understand how impossible it can feel to carry on every day. I also understand how difficult it can be to find someone who can be completely objective and supportive to your struggles, especially the ones that are more difficult to talk about. You do not have to feel that way. Any person and/or struggle is invited to see me. I am located at SEVN Therapy, which is a collection of therapists gathered to help our community. From the moment you walk through our doors, to the end of your session, we want you to feel welcomed, loved, and excited to come back for more.

All couples have arguments. What matters is what happens when you and your spouse disagree. Do you go round and round with no resolution? Or does one of you stop talking when the other gets frustrated, then you both stop talking? If so, you may wonder if your relationship can be fixed. I have good news. Your relationship is not broken, but it is caught in a negative cycle. This negative cycle keeps you from being able to communicate, resolve conflict, and discuss problems. If your relationship is struggling, it is probably because you are caught in a negative cycle. I want to help you and your spouse overcome the negative cycle.

You’ve taken the “right” steps to work towards your goals, yet it feels like you never get ahead. You’re a go-getter, a rule follower, a should-be success story, but you feel stuck. Behind closed doors, you’re coming apart at the seams and you just want a break! You think you should feel happy, yet some days it’s hard to find the motivation to even get out of bed. Every day is draining, and you wonder, “What’s wrong with me?” Your relationships are strained (because let’s face it, your parents weren’t exactly the best model for how to communicate), and nothing is going the way that you had planned.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
