Life is hard! Whether it be stressors of everyday life, family or
marital
issues, school or work-related problems or because of recent or past trauma/grief, life can become messy. It gets hard not only for oneself, but also for loved ones or those around us. The reality is it happens to ALL of us. Sometimes all we need is for someone to listen with compassion and without judgment. Sometimes we require resources or coping strategies to help navigate the obstacles life throws at us. No matter what it is we need, therapy is the first step. Therapy equips us with the tools that we need to face whatever hardships we have.

Life can be challenging in a number of different ways. We set goals and encounter obstacles. We have dreams but fall short. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I work with individuals, couples, and families to help them understand their challenges and work toward achieving their goals. This includes working with high-school aged adolescents and adults. And because each situation is unique, I begin the counseling relationship by listening carefully. I want to hear your story and meet you where you are.

Do you feel disconnected in your relationship? Do you feel stuck in this season with little hope of change? Are you able to be honest with yourself and your partner? It can be discouraging, as we all have a basic human need to be known and connected with others. I believe as we begin to discover, accept, and value our strengths, weaknesses, wants, and dreams, we are more equipped to accept and value our partner's. Taking time to understand ourselves enables us to communicate our needs more effectively and meet others needs more readily.

Most couples argue. What happens when you and your spouse disagree? Do you go round and round with no resolution? Or does one of you get frustrated and stop talking, then you both stop talking? If you're unable to resolve conflict, you may wonder if your relationship can be fixed. I have good news. Your relationship is not broken, but it is caught in a negative cycle. This negative cycle keeps you from being able to communicate, resolve conflict, and discuss problems. If your relationship is struggling, it is probably because you are caught in a negative cycle. I want to help you and your spouse overcome the negative cycle.

How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
