Accepting new clients! Do you feel overloaded, numb, or like you're just getting by? Are there events in your life that impact you but you don't feel like you have the tools to handle? I understand, and you are not alone. I believe in providing a safe space for my clients, allowing them to share their concerns while offering practical tools for positive life change. Rather than focusing on isolated issues, I prefer to examine the whole picture, diving into different aspects of my clients’ lives. By addressing what might be hurting or holding my clients back, I foster a supportive environment for healing and growth.

My experience as a special education teacher, campus administrator and counselor for almost three decades has provided me the knowledge and skills to work with your child, adolescent, and even adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, addiction or PTSD. Understanding how these challenges ultimately affect behaviors in the classroom, at home, and in the workplace environments, help fuel my passion to connect, learn, and problem solve with my clients and their families on an interpersonal level in an effort to build HOPE.

Our beliefs about ourselves and the world around us significantly impact our behaviors and reactions to experiences and the people around us. Sometimes we need to express our thoughts and emotions in an objective and non-judgmental space. I offer a safe place to express your thoughts and feelings while helping you explore how they influence the way you navigate difficulties. Together, we work toward building adaptive beliefs and thought processes and developing practical skills to triumph over your challenges.

Each client is unique and brings specific needs and concerns to treatment. My goal is to help you identify areas in your life creating pain or distress and identify alternate strategies. The goal of treatment is to empower you to identify necessary changes and make choices to effectively alter your life. Treatment is not a recipe book with directives, but rather a collaborative effort to help you overcome any hurdles you are facing and move toward a happier and more fulfilling life. Change often comes in our most distressing moments, but can bring joy and happiness to our futures!

Are you feeling lost in life, like the way forward is being swept away before you can find it? Struggling with the future leads to all kinds of day-to-day struggles: can't focus, can't sleep, eating your feelings, not wanting to be around people just to name a few. I love helping people figure out who and what they want to be when they grow up and finding control over the everyday struggles.

Thoughts, feelings and experiences can sometimes be so difficult to sift through alone! Together, we can develop a safe and nurturing space to begin exploring the intricacies of yourself and the world around you. My strength based perspective focuses on person- in- environment, taking into consideration the many facets of human exposure and environmental influences that formulate a person’s life. I have come to see that a person’s greatest power to change comes mostly from their own internal resources of reflection, motivation and realization. My main objective is to be a caring companion to this healing process.

My approach to counseling is rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy incorporating aspects of interpersonal, relational, insight oriented and solution focused therapies. I often get asked, “What’s a good reason to seek counseling?” Or “Why do people go to counseling?” And the short answer is, “For lots of reasons.” If you’re feeling stuck, have experiences you’re wanting to sort through with someone, wanting to re-learn how to have healthy relationships with others or yourself, have experienced significant grief, trauma, or impacting experiences, or simply want to better understand what has shaped your life and desire to live a more integrated and full life, then I’d say come check it out. Emailing me is the best way to get a hold of me.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
