Over the last few years, I have had the honor to work with first responders, prior military, and their families to manage and heal from the disabling effects of trauma. This work expanded my career into the spaces of addiction, men’s issues, sexual trauma, grief and loss, and shame to name a few. Though this work I found a passion for working with relationships in trouble.

Hi! I'm Ashton and I'm glad you found me. I specialize in helping couples and individuals who are finding that their relationships are a big stressor in their life. Many of the clients I see are seeking counseling to improve communication skills and increase enjoyment and connectedness in their relationships. Clients who work with me often need help working through relationship betrayals and hurts that inevitably happen in relationships, but that can leave you feeling stuck. I use therapeutic modalities that help couples and individuals move past relationship patterns that no longer serve them into more stable ways of functioning.

Have you ever found yourself thinking, "Wow! I am really in over my head right now." or "Shouldn't I be able to figure this out?" What about questioning how others seem to manage while you feel like you're falling apart? I want to assure you that you're not alone in these thoughts and feelings. It's possible to find peace and confidence in yourself, even during challenging situations or crises, and to feel confident knowing you'll know what to do when difficult emotions and situations arise. Sometimes counseling can provide a little extra support to help you truly feel equipped to handle what life is throwing at you right now.

Hi, I am Macquenie Palmer-Beckford. If you’ve been feeling exhausted no matter how much you sleep, constantly overthinking every little thing, or struggling just to get through the day, you’re not alone. Maybe you’ve been feeling on edge, shut down, or stuck in a fog that you can’t seem to shake. You keep showing up, holding it together for everyone else but inside, you’re running on empty. Maybe you’ve caught yourself thinking, “I don’t even feel like myself anymore.” The things that used to make you happy don’t hit the same. You want to get back to feeling “normal,” but you don’t even know where to start.

My ideal client is an adult impacted by a loved one’s military service or combat-related trauma. They may feel chronically stressed, emotionally on edge, or disconnected from themselves after years of caregiving or hypervigilance. They want a space where they don’t have to explain military culture, where their exhaustion makes sense, and where they can regain steadiness, clarity, and a stronger sense of who they are beyond the role they’ve been carrying.

How does cognitive processing therapy work?
A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.

What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?
Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.

How long does cognitive processing therapy last?
CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.

How effective is cognitive processing therapy?
A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
