Hi! I'm Ashton and I'm glad you found me. I specialize in helping couples and individuals who are finding that their relationships are a big stressor in their life. Many of the clients I see are seeking counseling to improve communication skills and increase enjoyment and connectedness in their relationships. Clients who work with me often need help working through relationship betrayals and hurts that inevitably happen in relationships, but that can leave you feeling stuck. I use therapeutic modalities that help couples and individuals move past relationship patterns that no longer serve them into more stable ways of functioning.

Over the last few years, I have had the honor to work with first responders, prior military, and their families to manage and heal from the disabling effects of trauma. This work expanded my career into the spaces of addiction, men’s issues, sexual trauma, grief and loss, and shame to name a few. Though this work I found a passion for working with relationships in trouble.

Taking the first step toward therapy is already an act of courage — and you already have more strength than you may realize.
Treatment is most effective when grounded in empathy and genuineness. Sessions are collaborative and grounding, with a focus on uncovering unique strengths you already possess and finding practical ways to move forward with confidence and intention. It would be an honor to walk alongside you.

When it comes to talk therapy, I enjoy utilizing Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ( ACT).
My areas of specialty include first responder/veteran PTSD, substance abuse, trauma, and mindfulness. I am EMDR trained and have extensive experience utilizing EMDR to resolve trauma associated with first responder experiences, accidents, grief/loss, military combat, childhood sexual abuse, domestic violence, and more. My work, as well as my personal life, is grounded in mindfulness. When we train our attention to stay in the present moment, we become much more aware of the stories we tell ourselves and how much suffering we experience as a result.

Are relationship dynamics, family tension, or the patterns you keep repeating leaving you feeling stuck and disconnected from who you truly are? Whether the struggle is personal, between partners, or felt across the whole family, it rarely exists in isolation — and neither should the solution. You don't have to untangle it alone, and you don't have to choose between getting help as an individual or getting help together. In addition to individual therapy, I specialize in couples and family therapy, helping you gain deeper insight into your patterns and become more of who you truly are.

Learning that you may be autistic or identify as part of the neurodiverse spectrum can evoke a range of complex emotions, including fear, confusion, and even excitement. Finding a therapist who understands these feelings and can relate to your unique experiences within the autistic community can be challenging, particularly when also navigating queer identity. My name is Payton Hightower, and I am a late-diagnosed autistic adult who embraces my identity as a proud queer individual, married to a woman. I possess the knowledge and skills to support you on your journey.

Supervised by Ashton Fisher Jimenez, M.S. LPC-S (License 66488): I once heard a saying that eventually, the pain of staying stuck will outweigh the fear of moving forward. People often stay stuck because they’re not sure what to do next and are afraid to try something new—sometimes, even when it hurts, the familiarity just feels safer. But what if, with support, you could find a clearer path forward? People often struggle with the stressors of everyday life with limited resources and then blame themselves when their relationships, finances, or careers do not work out.

You are living a daily battle in your head about what you can eat, how much you should exercise, if you are worthy of taking up space. You are consumed by counting calories and by the negative voice inside that tells you, you’ll never be good enough or thin enough, smart enough or pretty enough. You are fed up with how the society/culture tells you how you should look and feel and behave. Your behaviors have you feeling exhausted and depleted and you wonder how you can go on another day. Others may think you have it all together on the outside, but the mental torture inside is killing you and feel like your life is shrinking.

I really enjoy the therapeutic modalities of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ( ACT) as they both provide an avenue for the client to take control of their therapeutic experience while I act as a guide to provide them the ultimate client-centered experience.
I work primarily with adults and have most experience with older adults (55+). Most of the clients that I have worked with have experiences with depression, anxiety, grief, and coping with role changes across the lifespan.

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
