I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor and a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor. I have worked with children and families for over 20 years. To give children the tools to process and understand their world and what they have experienced in a way that cognitively and verbally they may not have the ability to do just yet.

We live in a time where we struggle to understand how to cope with our mental health needs, especially during the last few years of dealing with COVID-19 and lockdowns. Our thoughts are powerful and we minimize the effect they have on us, this can be overwhelming without the coping skills needed to deal with them. Understand and be assured, you have come to the right place. The combination of graduating from both UT Southwestern (Rehabilitation Counseling) and Texas Woman's University (Counseling & Development) has helped me understand both sides of the counseling process, medical and behavioral. Give me a call or email when ready!

Many of my clients have experienced a traumatic event(s) such as sexual, physical, or emotional abuse, or neglect. The last ones can be harder to define because invalidation is a common form of emotional neglect that is hard to label. Despite what the trauma is or if it falls into one of those categories exactly, if it affects you, then it matters. Clients come to me with confusion and emotional pain that I help them sift through and connect with in order to heal and return to their new normal version of life. I welcome all clients from all walks of life, races, cultures, genders, and preferences.

Lately, you’ve felt overwhelmed by your emotions. When you try to make sense of things, your thoughts are impossible to organize. You know that your friends/family are concerned about you but you don’t know how to ask for support. And honestly, you’re scared to slow down- staying busy keeps the negative thoughts and difficult emotions away. You might be surrounded by people but you feel utterly alone. You’re trying not to burden others but you’re not sure how much longer you can avoid having a break down.

Hello! I am so glad to see that you have decided to take this step. This process can be intimidating but it is very worthwhile. Counseling is a collaborative process in which the counselor helps clients find their truths and answers to the questions that brought them to counseling, along with ones they discover during their journey. Therapy is a space to help clients be their whole self in a safe, judgement free environment. Sessions are personalized for each unique client and may include talk therapy, EMDR, sandtray, activities or expressive arts.

“It is the client who knows what hurts, what directions to go, what problems are crucial, what experiences have been deeply buried”- Carl Rogers. The process of beginning therapy is often one of the most difficult parts of the journey, but it is worth it. My clinical specialty is helping clients process and heal from trauma, but I am also passionate about working with adolescents, adults, couples and families that may be experiencing a wide array of issues. These may include depression, anxiety, gender dysphoria, trauma, or difficulty with various changes or situations that occur throughout life.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
