Therapy is a process that is short-term or long-term depending on many factors. For therapy to be successful both therapist and client have to be motivated and committed to creating and reaching goals. Clients want to be part of the process and should be, as the more involved they are the more successful their therapy experience will be - the outcome. Therapy is a challenge, as is anything we want to resolve, heal, and/or change in our lives. Finally, clients want a positive, beneficial experience, and my job as a therapist is to weave that into sessions, even in the midst of trauma, issues, and mental health disorders.

Life is full of ups and downs. A big transition, the death of a loved one, or a traumatic event can show up as anxiety, depression, addiction, or even physical pain. These feelings don’t have to linger. With evidence-based therapies, such as EMDR, I can help you overcome traumatic events or simply unhealthy (and often untrue) ways of thinking of yourself and emerge as the “new” you with the clarity, confidence, and joy needed to live the life you deserve.

My training as a healer began with my own in-depth psychotherapy. Subsequently, I have worked with adults, teens and kids in the areas of substance and sexual abuse, depression and anxiety, fear and grief . I attended a six months professional training program in DreamTending at Pacifica Graduate Institute where I deepened my understanding of archetypal medicine and indigenous methods of healing through the use of dreams and all that surrounds us in the natural world. My approach is holistic, helping my clients integrate mind, body and spirit.

If you are reading this, you are searching for help. Allow me to speak candidly to you. I have been trained to help and I believe that the therapist and the client are a team. Every individual is unique but we all have needs. When these needs are not met the result, many times, can be emptiness, depression, anger or even hopelessness. I don't just sat in a chair with a pad and pen and ask you to "tell me more". I am a listener not a judge often interjecting questions and insights that you may not have considered. My passion is helping others. Let us meet where you are and together we work to get where you want to be.

Life is too difficult of a journey to navigate alone. We all need trusted people to help us navigate the ups, the downs, and the winding road we travel in life. I believe that while on your journey through life, having an available, trusted guide to come alongside you, to point you toward truth, to listen with compassion, and to empower you to live the most full and free version of life that you were meant to live is vital. I love having the opportunity to come alongside people who are struggling with life or relationships and help them discover the hope and healing that is available to them.

Emotional health difficulties are like a cold, everyone gets them from time to time. However, if the cold goes on for weeks or keeps on getting worse, you should probably see a healthcare professional. This is true for our emotional health as well. If we want to be healthy, we have to take care of ourselves: body, mind and soul. Psychotherapy is medical treatment and care intended to relieve or heal the soul. It is a journey of self-discovery, personal growth, healing and wholeness. I have 20 years of experience supporting and guiding clients in a variety of areas including mental health, health care, disability and family services.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
