I come from a background in education, serving students and families in local districts since 2007, first through teaching and then through school psychology beginning in 2017. Within that timeframe, I have developed counseling skills working primarily with adolescents in the school setting. I believe that individuals thrive within an atmosphere of unconditional positive regard and solution-focused goal-setting.

As a registered play therapist, I utilize child- centered play therapy. This is an effective approach that allows children to process challenges and communicate using their natural language of play. Play therapy is a process in which children are given the opportunity to work through past or current difficulties. I utilize techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy with adolescents and adults to help individuals address current thought patterns and develop positive coping skills. In addition to training and experience in a variety of therapeutic treatment modalities, I draw from my training as a certified yoga teacher.

The teen years can be a time of uncertainty for both teens and their parents.
As a former educator and dyslexia therapist, I understand the obstacles that neurodiverse children and teens face both in and out of school and in relationships. I offer support to help children and families understand the unique characteristics of dyslexia, ADHD, and anxiety, how their brain works, and how it impacts their daily lives.

Do you feel disconnected from your spouse-- perpetually trying "reach" him or her, but angry, sad or frustrated at your inability to connect? Or perhaps you find yourself distancing from your marriage partner, avoiding conflict in order to feel safe, only to find yourself "walking on eggshells." You feel the pain of disconnection with the person you love, and you feel stuck; maybe it even feels hopeless at times. If only you could re-discover the bond that somehow still exists beneath the rubble of fighting, avoiding and blaming. Or, possibly your struggles are more individual than relational?

You or your child's anxiety and neurodiversity are getting the best of you. Other people don't seem to understand or "get" it. You may have sensory sensitivities, rejection vulnerability, or challenges with executive function. If you also have experienced trauma or have depression or anxiety, it can feel very overwhelming. Or perhaps you've been diagnosed as neurodiverse as an adult and need to process what this all means. I get it; as an AuDHDer (Autism and ADHD) myself, I've dealt with this before, and I'm here to help. I’m Amy, and I’m a counselor in Buda, TX, specializing in trauma, anxiety, and neurodiversity/ADHD.

I help both individuals and couples navigate betrayal, eroded trust, intimacy challenges, and fertility or parenting journeys.
Are you feeling frustrated, exhausted, and dissociated from your partner, your kids, or your life as a whole? This may be stemming from betrayal, disconnection, infertility, or loss of identity, creating a seemingly unbreakable cycle of miscommunication and hurt. When you constantly feel misunderstood or unseen, it can be difficult to keep negative thoughts at bay. Often it feels easier to avoid and emotionally disengage rather than sit in the discomfort. You may be unsure why you feel this way, how to stop unhelpful behaviors, or how to meet your needs along with everyone else’s – and nothing you try seems to be working.

Parenting Therapists
What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
