My name is Sean Martin and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor from Southeast Texas. I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and then a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Development, both from Lamar University. I became a fully Licensed Professional Counselor in 2014. My approach to therapy begins by working with you to establish trust and the safety of unconditional positive regard so that together we can work toward manifesting the changes you want to experience. I’ve come to learn that everyone has their own journey they must walk, so there is no “one size fits all” counseling technique.

Fear, anxiety, and shame are often the root causes of many of our society’s mental struggles and concerns. If you feel like you are in a pit of despair or stuck in your pattern of thinking, you may need help getting a new focus or sharing your burden with someone who can listen without judgement. My specialty is adolescents or young adults who are struggling with depression or anxiety. I also work with children by implementing play and art therapy as a means to gain trust and insight into his/her motivations and the crisis present. My philosophy and interventions are faith based, research supported, and very solution focused.

“It’s okay to feel unstable. It’s okay to disassociate. It’s okay to hide from the world. It’s okay to need help. It’s okay not to be okay. Your mental illness is not a personal failure.” Anonymous. I choose to become a mental health professional to help people to grow to their potential. What I love the most about being a mental health professional is having the opportunity and privilege of being a part of people’s journeys. I believe that everyone has the ability to change. No matter what is going on in your life - if you do the work and use your skills, you can see real change.

From, art therapy and reflective processing, to practicing skills and changing behaviors through a cognitive behavioral approach.
Do you feel tired, overwhelmed or maybe burnt out, welcome to the new world we live in. This is the new trend I have witnessed in the last few years. We all could use more skills, compassion and mindfulness to deal. I am motivated to help you reach YOUR goals, and sometimes that starts with merely finding out what your goals are. Then we will make a plan for change in small obtainable steps, this will not only build up your self-confidence in your ability to change but also put you on a path to reach the big goals in a substantiable way, for lifelong improvements.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
