After working with hundreds of weight loss surgery clients, I have a unique understanding among mental health professionals of the challenges that come before and after bariatric surgery.
Oftentimes a problematic relationship with food reflects deficits in our ability to care for our emotional needs. If you are looking to know why you struggle to apply your nutritional and exercise knowledge, endlessly torture yourself with diets, and/or continue to lose and regain the same 20+ pounds, I would love to work with you!

I help you to change habits, feelings and thoughts that aren't supporting you right now, using the power of your subconscious mind. My clients usually come to me when something is getting in the way of their feeling good or doing well. It could be to stop smoking or another 'bad' habit, a weight issue, under-performance in sports or school, stress or frustration at work or at home, relationship challenges from the past or in the present, or simply stop doing what isn't working and start doing what is, making it easy and automatic within the mind.

People are naturally resilient with the right support. Therapy facilitates the healing process by helping you deeply understand yourself, with compassion, so your presenting concerns can be effectively addressed. My approach varies to fit the style and presenting issues of each client. Typically, I take a holistic approach combining in-depth traditional talk therapy with more recent, empirically-validated and present-focused approaches. I sometimes act as a life coach, helping clients change behaviors and discern choices that lead toward the lives they envision. My predominant focus is guiding deeper exploration that results in real inner transformation, personal fulfillment, and learning to love yourself.

Currrent Reviews at www.jsptherapy.com. Parenting and relationships don't come with instructions. Couples often say: "We constantly argue and never resolve anything. Give us some communication tools." Individuals tell me: "I'm stuck. Anxious. Depressed. I want to enjoy life." These are fixable problems. For over 25 years, I have helped people identify what stands in the way of them giving and receiving the love they want and the life success they desire. If you are exhausted from trying, or the one most hurt, I can help you focus on what's within your control to change situations.

Therapy provides the unique opportunity for you to adventure into and openly investigate your internal world. Emotional transformations can be akin to wading into the ocean or navigating a new trail in the forest. While these pursuits are exciting, they can also be intimidating, challenging, or frustrating at times. I view my role as your co-pilot; helping you to navigate what it is that brings you to therapy with the goal of unleashing your innate strengths and ability to overcome. I do so with a genuine curiosity and openness, integrating my training in mindfulness and Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy.

It's incredibly easy to feel overwhelmed and disconnected with life, especially these days when so much can feel uncertain. Without the proper mental health tools to tackle your issues, you may find yourself in a repetitive loop of the same old behavioral patterns. It can be exhausting and frustrating to feel stuck in life and you may wonder where you went "wrong." It may feel daunting to reach out to a therapist (no, really, I get it!) but know that my sessions are free of judgment and are a safe place to talk and problem solve. I believe you have most of the answers you need: I'm merely the facilitator to help you in your crisis.

Whether you’re considering therapy for the first time or have already done this work, I’m so glad that you’re taking this meaningful step for yourself. Pursuing therapy requires strength; strength that we can build on in our sessions together. I’ve learned from experience that finding the right therapist who fits your needs and personality is critical to achieving your emotional goals, especially when the work gets uncomfortable.

Most of the people I work with are thoughtful and responsible, carrying more than others realize. On the outside, they seem steady. On the inside, they feel anxious, overextended, or disconnected from themselves. I believe healing happens when we stop fighting ourselves and begin listening to and integrating all parts of who we are. I see therapy as a space to slow down, get curious, and untangle the patterns keeping you stuck. I blend ACT, relational work, and somatic awareness to help you notice what you’re holding, how your nervous system has learned to protect you, and what your deeper values are asking for.

You may be strong and self-aware—but in certain relationships, you feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, or constantly pulled into conflict. You may feel like you’re always explaining, defending, or walking on eggshells in your relationships. I help women navigate high-conflict dynamics, including relationships with narcissistic or emotionally volatile partners, so they can feel calmer, more confident, and grounded in how they respond. Using a blend of CBT, somatic therapy, and EFT tapping, we work to reduce reactivity, strengthen boundaries, and help you stay steady—even when others aren’t.

What is the relationship between weight management and mental health?
Mental health can be significantly influenced by one's physical health, so overall improvements in one's quality of life as a result of improved physical functioning from weight loss can have an overall positive impact on an individual's mental health and allow them to engage more readily in everyday activities. In addition, many strategies used to manage weight, such as exercise and maintaining a healthy diet, are also associated with reducing the symptoms of common mental health conditions, such as anxiety or depression. Individuals may also benefit from the improved self-esteem and self-efficacy that can come with successful weight management.

What is the psychological approach to losing weight?
While there are no specific therapy modalities specifically for weight loss, common psychological therapies can be highly effective in helping clients make lasting lifestyle changes. This may be called the "psychological approach" to weight loss because it does not rely on physical interventions, such as medication or weight loss surgery, to help clients lose weight. Weight loss counseling can be used in addition to or instead of such physical interventions. Some clients simply seek therapy to address the challenges that may accompany weight loss in general, including negative thoughts surrounding their body, disordered eating patterns, or difficulty completing daily tasks as a result of their weight challenges. In such cases, therapists will often utilize behavioral coaching or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques to help clients understand how their thoughts may be influencing their diet and physical activity patterns.

What type of therapy is commonly used in weight loss counseling?
Weight loss counseling often involves a combination of therapy and psychoeducation. Common techniques used by weight loss counselors include journaling, thought diaries, and other Cognitive Behavioral Therapy strategies that encourage clients to consider how their feelings about their weight loss impact their mental health. Weight loss counselors may also teach clients mindfulness exercises, which can be used by clients during and after eating to be more aware of physical cues from their body surrounding eating. Some clients looking for weight loss therapy may also benefit from group therapy approaches, which utilize the power of social connection and accountability to help clients adhere to their weight loss plan.

Is therapy recommended for individuals undergoing bariatric surgery?
While therapy is not a requirement for individuals undergoing bariatric surgery, many individuals undergoing weight loss surgery may benefit from seeing a counselor. Prior to surgery, counselors can help clients decide whether surgical weight loss is a good fit for them and assist in surgery preparation. Post-surgery, counselors can assist clients with the psychological component of maintaining their weight loss, as well as help clients navigate any postoperative pain. Throughout the surgical process, therapists can help clients process body-image challenges that may come with dramatic changes in weight, as well as manage symptoms of anxiety or depression that may accompany the major life changes bariatric surgery can bring.
