Originally developed for healing
trauma
, EMDR has been proven to be effective in helping many other needs.
Hello, my name is Catherine Stansbury, LMSW. I am a social worker and an EMDR Trained Therapist. I practice at Divine Mercy Counseling, a group practice in Austin, Texas. My clinical supervisor is Kasey Shaw Salyer, LCSW-S. I specialize in
trauma
therapy for individual adults, ages 18-100. I have a special interest in older adults and their caregivers, since caregiving is what led me to become a social worker. It is my honor and my joy to work with persons who have carried terrible burdens of
trauma
and pain for many years; and to help them unload those burdens, and find healing, hope, and peace.

Do you struggle in your personal relationships? Have you been in multiple relationships that went a little too quickly? Are you looking for external gratification instead of working from within? Have you experienced a car accident, being domestically abused, and or anything that was traumatic for YOU? If any of these questions resonated with you give me a call. I specialize in anxiety, borderline personality disorder, and
trauma
. We live in a world full of invalidation and sometimes all it takes to feel better is to be validated. Giving yourself one hour per week or per month will give you the ability to look within.

It is a form of therapy that helps people heal from
trauma
or other distressing life experiences.
I love helping people find their way, whether through traumatic experiences from the past or through current life stressors. For adolescents and adults who have experienced emotional
trauma
, I utilize
trauma
-focused approaches, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). There are a variety of approaches to therapy and together, we will explore which would be most beneficial to you as the client. I find that most people really enjoy the therapeutic experience and come out of it more self-assured and confident.

If you feel like you have tried everything and nothing works, I get you! I strongly believe that we all have an inner wisdom deep within us, but through our life experiences and social influences, most of us lose access to our Real truth. In our work together I will guide and support you as we peel back the layers so that you can reconnect with your deeper sense of self. As you begin to make that connection, shift happens. My hope is for you to leave my office feeling empowered in your healing journey.

When we experience
trauma
, we might often feel "stuck" in our journey.
My connection with you is a deep relationship that I do not take for granted. As children, many of us had to learn to make ourselves smaller in order to feel loved or worthy. These early life experiences often shape how we view ourselves and our relationships with others. I work with adult individuals who struggle to find their own voice and identity through a collaborative approach. Together, we will rediscover your voice and reclaim your space. You deserve to take up space in every single room that you are in.

***NOT CURRENTLY TAKING NEW CLIENTS*** It is my philosophy that individuals are constantly growing and changing. Sometimes we can get stuck, feeling confused, helpless or hopeless. Often times we get bogged down by the debris of past or current traumas, or by fears of the future and the unknown. I believe therapy is about creating change and I work collaboratively with individuals to help them work toward their goals for change. My role as a therapist is to act as a guide in helping individuals gain clarity by uncovering the debris that inhibits growth and discovering the assets and strengths that reside within each individual.

I believe the goal of therapy is to learn new, skillful ways to be with your mind and body. In our work together, this new way of being is grounded in mindfulness, and in your inherent capacity to become increasingly aware of the fluid, changing, and dynamic relationship between your thoughts, emotions, and behavior. This is at the heart of what we do together. When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
