We, as social creatures, thrive when we feel understood and accepted. My goal as a clinician is to assist individuals in creating a greater sense of self-understanding, acceptance and appreciation. I am certified in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy but use a variety of approaches in treatment.

I trained for two years in inpatient psychiatric units, working with children, teens, and adults after suicide attempts.
Welcome! I feel honored to work with children, teens, and young adults who are going through some of the most challenging times of their lives. I specialize in therapy for suicidality and self-harm, and comprehensive assessments, including neuropsych testing. There are numerous reasons people engage in self-harm and/or experience suicidality, but some of the commonalities tend to be dislike of yourself, feeling isolated and alone, and feeling that your psychological pain is unbearable and unsolvable. I work with clients to find ways to feel hope again, start to like themselves, and find alternative ways to cope with their pain.

In counseling I work with children age 5+, teens, adults, couples from all walks of life to cope with anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, behavior problems, and many more.
This is the first step to feeling better. It is important to take care of all aspects of you but often it is hard to know where to start and feel stuck. Seeking help can also be overwhelming. But mental pain is as hurtful as physical pain is and you have the right to heal, and feel good and happy. Our journey starts with us creating a relationship with each other based on trust without judgment. In our sessions, you have a safe space to share and communicate with someone who keeps your thoughts, feelings, and experiences confidential.

I specialize in using DBT, CBT, and IFS modalities to help adults (and some teens) struggling with substance use, personality disorders, self-harm/ suicidal thoughts, emotional outbursts, and other behavioral issues.
We all begin the therapeutic journey with our own set of strengths and needs. Sometimes our uniqueness promotes creativity, new perspectives, and collaboration. Other times our uniqueness can be terminal; leading to emptiness, feeling disconnected from self and others, and beliefs that mental health treatment may work for other people, but it won’t work for you. Therapy is not about “getting over” events and issues; it’s about understanding your triggers and learning how to manage your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors so that you can move forward and continue to build a fulfilling life.

Around my mid 20s I found myself feeling very lost in life. I had graduated college, but I didn’t know what to do with my degree, so I bounced from one meaningless job to another. While I was trying to figure out my purpose and direction, tragedy struck and in 2010 I lost my father to suicide , with no warning at all. In order to make peace with what happened, a few months later I applied to graduate school with the intention of getting into a field where I could help and possibly prevent people from having to experience what I experienced. I also realized I wanted to help people like my dad, who didn’t know how to ask for help.

Those I work with are often quite stuck. They may even be in crisis. They struggle with anxiety, depression, upsetting or intrusive thoughts/voices, unexplainable feelings in their bodies, painful memories, questions about gender or sexuality, substance abuse, suicide and more. These experiences may interfere with friendships, parenting, romantic relationships and/or work. The symptom, no matter what particular form it takes, is a message that wants to be heard and hopes to be spoken.

I have specialties working with people struggling with trauma and PTSD, personality disorders, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, emotion dysregulation, and behavioral issues.
I like to think of therapy as investing in yourself. You're the one person you are guaranteed to spend your entire life with, and there's no breaks from being with you. Prioritizing your mental well-being is an important step in reaching a place where you can feel content and satisfied in the relationship with yourself. This, in turn, will move you forward in ways that help you create meaningful connections with others, build community, and stride toward your goals in life. That path might seem scary and uncertain, you might even think it impossible, but I want you to know it IS possible and you don't have to walk it alone.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
