I work with children, adolescents, and adults on a wide range of concerns, including complex trauma, abuse, anxiety, depression, and ODD.
When we experience trauma, we are often left feeling alone, misunderstood, invisible, and unsafe, even within ourselves. Through the process of therapy, we can regain hope, connection, safety, and understanding of ourselves and others. I use wide-range of evidenced-based modalities, from psychodynamic and CBT to EMDR and somatic therapies to decrease the emotional reactivity, tension, and isolation that trauma can create. Regardless of our trauma histories, our modern world can contribute to feelings of disconnection, dissatisfaction, and uncertainty about our worth and our purpose.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your child’s misbehaviors, are unsure of how to support your child with emotional needs, or you've been getting phone calls from school about your child's behavior, I can teach you a set of skills effective in improving child behaviors, increasing child self-esteem, compliance, and that lead to more positive child interactions with parents, siblings, and peers. My approach centers on addressing difficulties related to oppositional defiance, tantrums, aggressive behaviors, anxiety (separation/selective mutism), ADHD symptoms, and distant parent-child relationships.

Being a parent is hard. We want our children to succeed in all areas of their lives, but sometimes we find ourselves dealing with difficult behaviors, such as defiance, tantrums, and meltdowns. We watch them struggle at home, at school, and with other kids. We talk to our friends, try a range of strategies, and still feel lost when all the traditional approaches don't help. That's why our experienced therapists are so glad that we can offer Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), an extremely effective evidence-based treatment designed to help you connect with your child and reduce behavior problems and distress in 3-4 months.

Most of the clients I have worked with over the years are looking for acceptance: familial, peer, and social. They are looking for their place to fit in. The challenges they face are "big" to them and important for them to gain understanding and guidance on how to move forward to a place that is comfortable for them where they can be "seen and heard". I have worked with, and learned from, a variety of people with a host of concerns over the years. I would say that I have learned as much from them as they have from me, if not more from them in how best to approach then work to resolve what there concerns are.

Oppositional Defiance (ODD) Therapists
What is the most effective treatment for oppositional defiant disorder?
The treatment of Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) will involve multiple approaches designed to help both the youngster and their parents, sometimes including medication. A therapist will help a child learn ways to regulate their emotions, curb their impulsiveness, and counteract anger, defiance, and disruption, while showing parents ways to bring these lessons into their home. A technique designed for children with conditions like ODD, known as Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS), may also be used. CPS addresses a child’s concerns and rewards appropriate responses while discouraging harsh punishment or criticism.
How does treatment for oppositional defiant disorder work?
Treatment for ODD addresses the issues underlying a child’s defiance and disruption, the emotional regulation and impulse-control skills they lack, and the way adults respond to them. ODD therapy is based on the idea that children with the disorder understand the difference between right and wrong, that they want to behave well, and that, with help, they can. By responding to the child with empathy instead of harsh criticism, ignoring nonviolent behaviors, and rewarding positive actions, a therapist, and the other adults in a child’s life, can help children improve their behavior.
How long does therapy for oppositional defiant disorder take?
Therapy for oppositional defiant disorder is not a short-term undertaking. Depending on the severity of a child’s symptoms, their age, the presence of other conditions like ADHD, anxiety or a mood disorder, and their family dynamic, it can take months before improvement is noted. The cooperation of parents and teachers is crucial, because the skills learned in therapy must be practiced in real-world situations, with all their potential triggers.
Does oppositional defiant disorder go away?
ODD can remit following treatment. ODD is often diagnosed in nursery school, and early intervention is essential for a positive prognosis. In two-thirds of children, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, symptoms resolve within three years.
