I specialize in anxiety, depression, life transitions, grief and loss, shame, men's issues , and relationship issues and focus on young adults and adults.
Navigating transition and uncertainty alone can be daunting and generate fears that keep us stuck. We can feel trapped in our heads, and whether change is something we are actively pursuing or is a condition we feel is forced upon us, it can be difficult to find a way out, especially all on our own! Therapy can be a place to unburden ourselves and share our minds with someone who can provide an outside perspective and help us move forward with purpose. It can also be especially helpful for people who struggle with vulnerability and shame and provide a safe space to express and process emotions and struggles.

Situations, challenges, thoughts, feelings...they come in different styles and effect us all differently. I'm interested in you, though, and how I can help. I've worked with a variety of clients: teens, young adults, regular adults; and with a variety of issues: life changes, family conflict, body image and eating concerns, men's issues , addictions, and trauma. If you would benefit from a goal directed approach and are willing to take the risk to be vulnerable, then I can help. Let's talk to see if I would be a fit.

I work with a wide range of clientele, including those dealing with women's and/or men's issues , life transitions, anxiety, depression, body image issues/self-love, adverse childhood experiences, and others.
I naturally work from a strengths-based, client-centered perspective and feel that collaboration and rapport are key components in the therapeutic process. My goal is to help clients heal and flourish in their lives. Through deeper emotional exploration, things that seem to keep getting us "stuck" can be examined and worked through, resulting in true healing and change. In our sessions, I work with my clients in exploring thoughts, emotions, experiences, relationships, behaviors, etc. and together we work towards a healthier and happier life.

My philosophy is to offer culturally responsive evidenced-based treatments. I treat clients who suffer from anxiety and OCD. While anxiety is a natural part of our human experience, too much can be maladaptive. Influenced by evidence-based and Buddhist mindfulness approaches, my goal is to help clients examine and confront the root cause(s) of their anxiety, find better ways to manage it, and ultimately pursue a life consistent with their values.

Through therapy, I help people who seek connection. I help people identify connections between their brain, body, and relationships. Understanding how these areas interact and influence one another helps empower people to take control of their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Working with a counselor who understands the anatomy and biology of the brain is critical during therapy. Identifying when and why specialized neural systems are activated helps people gain self-awareness, prepare for action, and implement change.

Men's lives are complex today. The identities we grew up with seem out of date and unaccepted. Are you cut off from your feelings and estranged from the fullness of life? Are you anxious or depressed? Do you only feel comfortable in your world of work? Is the external thing or accomplishment you’re chasing no longer giving you meaning or purpose? Are you having problems in relationships with those you care about? Perhaps you find life dry and difficult but cannot put your finger on why. I understand these harsh realizations and help men sort through and navigate their situations and challenges. Take a look at my WEBSITE today.

While I've worked with clients across a broad spectrum of needs and therapeutic goals I have most often found a fit with clients seeking change in their lives in the context of a collaborative relationship in therapy. I emphasize the importance of purpose in a person's life to provide motivation for practical change, leveraging both the internal resources someone already possesses and the potential to develop much more. I want to focus with a client on lifestyle and attention to the wisdom that resides in the mind, body, and spirit as a part of the immense human capacity to grow and change.

I've focused my practice on substance use issues and addictive problems in people lives. For years I worked with women in eating disorders treatment utilizing an addictions model. Later I focused on men, and substance use disorders. Problems can stem from using drugs as an unproductive coping skill to a deeper more physiologically based problem. Our first job together is to find what your specific problem looks like and then find a way forward that's suited to your needs. In addition I also offer services evaluating clients for Substance Use Disorders in Family Law and Criminal cases.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
