Karina's a Licensed
Marriage
& Family Therapist licensed in Texas & California.
Sometimes we're faced with the why's (why is this happening), the what if's (what if it doesn't get better), and the how's (how am I supposed to get through this), and a lot of times these can take over, leaving us completely feeling well...hopeless. The truth is we are more resilient than we think, we can be stronger than we currently feel, and it's NOT always going to last forever.

Licensed as both a Professional Counselor and a
Marriage
& Family Therapist, I bring knowledge and experience from both fields into my work.
I'm proud of you. Awareness is the first step and searching for a therapist means you are already on a path to self-betterment. My role is to be a companion, someone to walk that path with you and help unlock personal insights and perspectives to improve your quality of life. Change is the unknown, so it is scary and difficult. We can become too comfortable in our routine of life, but your presence here means you are ready for the next adventure. Allow me to connect with you to fulfill my life's purpose and help you reach your full potential. You are not alone and you are cared for, even by people you haven't met yet.

I have been involved in training touching on a variety of topics since graduate school including:
Marriage
and Family issues, Mindfulness in Psychotherapy, the Immersion course with Diana Fosha(AEDP)and an in depth study of various models for working with couples including those formulated by Susan Johnson and Leslie Greenberg.
Over the years I have come to enjoy working with a variety of clients. I work with children ages 2 through adolescence utilizing play therapy as one of my modalities. I also see adults for individual issues including anxiety, depression, parenting, and relationship issues. My practice includes working with couples assisting them in recognizing the problem cycles that get created and hopefully learning to build intimacy and connection. Since I work with children, families are a part of my practice as well-I see each individual as an integral part of the whole.

just starting off, or a recent breakup. Sometimes we can't find exactly the right words, or know how to bring up a difficult topic. Whether you are looking to build connections, have better, more meaningful sex, or explore new paths for your relationship like polyamory, let's explore this together.

I work successfully with youth struggling in their everyday lives. Examples include anxiety over internal conflicts, grades, peers, & parents. I enjoy working with adults as they navigate new transitions i.e.
marriage
, parenthood or experience the challenges of parenthood. I'm interested in helping individuals & families deal with end of life planning trying to answer the awkward question, "So, what do you want to do?" What life saving measures should be taken if you become ill? What relationships need to be repaired? I want to help facilitate this difficult topic with elderly parents or terminally ill youth.

Individual, couples, pre-
marital
, and
marital
counseling all share one thing: a safe place to share, talk, question, and express your feelings and concerns within the context of your life and all of your relationships.
Therapy is a place for you to feel known and understood. It is also a place for you to overcome painful experiences. Together, we can work to gain a better understanding of YOURSELF and your relationships. We build on your strengths so you can apply them toward healing, growth, and change. If you are motivated to learn about yourself and discover new behaviors and new thought patterns, we will work well together. We each deserve to know what it feels like to be supported and that is what I am offering you. Please visit my website for more details about my practice. I AM NOW ALSO OFFERING TELE-THERAPY if that is more convenient.

marriage
and family systems, has made me uniquely qualified to assess and improve relationships within a family.
Life might have thrown you a new curveball that has gotten you off balance. OR nothing big has happened, but feelings of being stuck have emerged from somewhere. Psychotherapy offers you a safe place to make changes to old patterns that hold you back. I can help you navigate the uncharted path & assist in developing the insights & skills you need to thrive in life. Therapy works best when we collaborate toward created goals in a respectful & affirming setting. Our work involves identifying & working through unhealthy relationship patterns, helping to change the way you think to improve the way you feel, in order to live your life.

Therapy shouldn't have to be complicated - it's really about sitting down and talking with another person. What is most crucial - perhaps even more important than credentials and education - is that you feel comfortable with your therapist; otherwise, the therapy won't work.
I am a licensed
marriage
and family therapist (in Texas and California) as well as a certified alcohol and drug counselor. I have been in practice since 1994 and work with individuals, couples, families, and adolescents.

I have assisted clients for 20+ years with
marital
distress, depression, anxiety, panic disorders, life transitions, grief and loss, job stress, loneliness, personal empowerment, trauma, family of origin and other relationship issues.
Please Note: I am not taking new clients at this time. Do you feel overwhelmed at times? Are your normal coping skills failing to help you with life events and transitions? Are you feeling depressed, anxious or lost? Are your relationships stressed and leaving you feeling alone? You do not need to struggle alone. Therapy can give you a place to pause and breathe, gain some clarity and calm, revive your coping skills and add new perspectives. It provides a supportive place where everyone feels listened to and understood. Often it leads to amazing change, healing and growth.

Marriage Counseling Therapists
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
