I have served the field of psychology in the following ways: as a tenured professor specializing in ethics and multicultural training, on the Board of Trustees for the Texas Psychological Association, as president of the Society for the Psychology of Women of the American Psychological Association, on the executive boards for the Society for the Psychological Study of Culture, Ethnicity of the American Psychological Association and the National
Latino
Psychological Association.
Individuals, couples, and families who come to my office are generally in some sort of pain or discomfort, moving back and forth between what is happening in their lives and what they want from life. Our conversations help shed light on why this is happening and what we can do to help you feel better. Although I use a variety of psychotherapeutic methods in my practice, the foundation of my work is in the relationship we create, the trust we establish, and the compassion we share.
I welcome you to my practice.

in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with Concentration in
Latinx
Counseling from Seminary of the Southwest.
Debbie Seeger is supervised by Gena St. David, Ph.D., LPC-S, LMFT-S. I believe every journey begins with a single first step. Here you are…you’ve made that crucial first step. I chose to be a psychotherapist because I have personally experienced the power of counseling. While our experiences influence us, our circumstances do not need to define us. You are the expert on yourself, not me. I will walk alongside you, with full support and completely absent of judgment, as you journey toward your goals. Self-exploration can be frightening, and you will not be exploring alone.

I am passionate about working with
Latinx

Together we will untangle cultural expectations and reflect on your needs and the life you want. If you are experiencing negative self-beliefs, I offer EMDR which helps process the “stuck” memories, emotions, and sensations you’ve been holding onto. Other areas of expertise include disordered eating, intergenerational trauma, or being impacted by having a loved one on death row or incarcerated.

I am a
Latinx
, neurodiverse, nonbinary trans guy and gender affirmative therapist.
When seeking care, nothing is scarier to transgender and non binary folx than winding up with a provider who is poorly informed about the issues that face our community. From understanding discrimination and harassment and the various intersectionalities of our personhood to the process of transitioning and navigating this process, having a mental health provider who is affirming and competent makes a huge difference, whether your current mental health concerns are or aren't related to your gender.

As a
Latinx
therapist, I understand how our upbringing and culture can affect our mental health.
Life can be difficult sometimes for teens, adults, and parents. Childhood trauma, breaking generational cycles, or sudden life events can make us feel alone and unable to face our fears. This emotional pain can bring symptoms of depression and anxiety, cause a change in behavior and sleep or cause family conflict. You may ask yourself why did this happen to me? Or will I ever feel like myself? It all can feel overwhelming! As your therapist, I will walk with you as you process these changes to heal, grow, and empower yourself.

I only work with individual adults and it must be noted that I have experience working with African American,
Latino
, and LGBTQ+ communities.
The purpose of therapy is to create positive improvement within the individual, and to establish a higher quality of life. My approach to counseling/therapy varies somewhat with the needs of my clients. Primarily, I use the cognitive-behavioral approach to counseling/therapy. My style is interactive and I view the therapeutic relationship as a collaboration between client and therapist, for doing so creates equality within the therapeutic setting. Let the transformation begin!

I particularly enjoy working with clients of color (Black and
Latinx
).
Welcome! If you are sitting at your computer perusing therapy websites, I applaud you for taking the first step and having the courage to consider whether taking a therapeutic journey is the right decision for your life. While taking this journey is not easy, I fully believe that delegating time to work on ourselves allows us to grow in a mindful and self-accepting way. Psychotherapy is not a "one size fits all process." Instead, psychotherapy should be tailored to the client. Psychotherapy is about meeting you where you are at and working towards your goals in order for you to obtain the life you desire.

I've lived first hand the limited support available to folks and the stressed (and often sleep-deprived)
Latinx
community - whether due to trauma, work, parenting, or intergenerational caregiving.
Modern Balance Counseling is a virtual therapy practice for folks that are breaking the mold. If you are navigating changes in your relationship, if you are navigating parenthood (in the teen years or the early years), if you are healing your inner child and feel ready to break cycles, if you are ready to discover more about yourself and heal the scripts of the past... then this is the space for you! The name of the practice evokes its "why" as well as what I hope will be its offering for all folks that work with me. More than work-life balance, something relevant and practical... Modern Balance.

Being a person of color,
Latinx
, female, and neurodivergent myself propels me to respect, explore, and create a safe space for the differences in all of us.
I am a clinical social worker with over 21 years of experience licensed in the states of Florida, Texas, Vermont, and Massachusetts. I help clients address autism, ADHD, and the challenges that stem from these differences (C-PTSD, anxiety, depression, stress, relationships and communication challenges, family relationship challenges, and parenting support). I also have a lot of experience working with PTSD and C-PTSD, and helping individuals, couples and families improve their communications. I see my clients as the experts in their lives and my role as that of a guide toward insight and improvement.

How can I find a therapist in Austin?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
