The presence I bring into sessions comes from personal experience with extreme organized abuse, traumatic memory/ amnesia and spending 10+ years on the client side prior to becoming licensed.
Do you often feel misunderstood? Have you been told to toughen up because you are "too sensitive"? Do you long to feel closer to others but feel overwhelmed by the task? Having the capacity for depth and complexity can be difficult to navigate in our competitive, linear-oriented, results-driven culture. Knowing and accepting yourself for simply "you" (not who others think you should be) is an important practice to cultivate and will help release toxic stress and shame, allowing you to connect more deeply with yourself and others.

When we experience trauma, we are often left feeling alone, misunderstood, invisible, and unsafe, even within ourselves. Through the process of therapy, we can regain hope, connection, safety, and understanding of ourselves and others. I use wide-range of evidenced-based modalities, from psychodynamic and CBT to EMDR and somatic therapies to decrease the emotional reactivity, tension, and isolation that trauma can create. Regardless of our trauma histories, our modern world can contribute to feelings of disconnection, dissatisfaction, and uncertainty about our worth and our purpose.

My why as a therapist - to cut through the systemic issues in the mental health system and connect with people on a meaningful level that makes a difference. I do this work to help people heal at a core level. I believe people are capable of far more than just reducing the symptoms of a diagnosis. So I focus on helping you as a person, not a diagnosis. There are so many problems with our approach to mental health care in this country, don't even get me started. I can't solve them all. But what I can do is meet you with compassion, open-mindedness, and hear you out as the individual you are.

I approach my life's work humbly, even reverently, with deep sensitivity for what's got you even coming to see someone like me in the first place. I get that, really I do. And I'd love to help. I fit best with people who are okay with ambiguity and can "let the questions breathe," as we work on whatever has brought us together. I am able to see clients in Texas in person or virtually when you are in Arkansas.

I am an empathic therapist with 18 years therapy experience. Clients often come to me with an impaired sense of self, difficulties in relationships, and feeling unsafe in the world due to trauma/hardships in their lives. I assist my clients in transforming their deepest pain into their greatest strengths, finding passion in life, and confidence in themselves. They learn to have deep and meaningful relationships. Ideally, clients will move from a limited set of beliefs to an expansive perspective on what is possible in this life. Clients often describe my presence as calming and supportive, noting that our work together has led to meaningful change. For some, this transformation came after years of therapy that offered insight but lacked actionable steps. EMDR is a powerful tool that provides clients with the resources to achieve lasting change. I am trained in EMDR, the Gottman Method, and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. Additionally, I regularly attend advanced training in Complex PTSD, dissociative disorders, and relationship dynamics.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
