Has your
child
been overly anxious since the pandemic? Is your
child
experiencing more tantrums or having trouble focusing? Are you concerned your
child
is behind in school?
Children
and families are trying to adjust to significant changes in school, home, work, and social lives. As parents and caretakers, we are struggling to balance these very typical reactions to stress with how to move forward in the “new normal” of uncertain times. I can work with your family to determine why your
child
or adolescent is having difficulty and what we can do to help.

My career is grounded in the treatment of behavioral and emotional disorders in
children
and adolescents.
I believe that sometimes in our lives we need guidance with difficult decisions and challenging life circumstances. Psychotherapy can be beneficial to every person. Adolescents and
children
often need specialized treatment to help them become competent independent adults. Parents seek to have their
children
develop healthy values and beliefs. Getting these behaviors to take root requires a clear plan, based on sound scientific theory. This can be a challenging and frustrating journey. I use a variety of therapeutic techniques based on years of experience to identify my clients needs and provide the best direction.

You deserve to feel connected and safe in your closest relationships. It is lonely, painful, and frustrating when those relationships aren't going as you'd like. You may be confused about how to help a
child
who is struggling. You might wonder if you're making the right choices for your
child
and you may even worry that you're a bad parent. Or, maybe you feel disconnected from a partner. You long to feel close to the person you care about, but years of hurt and bottled up emotion make it difficult to know where to start.

A clinical
child
psychologist, I love working with pre-teen, adolescent and college-age girls who are struggling to establish a sense of self.
Pain exists to make us pay attention. Trying desperately not to hurt, we compromise our integrity, our hearts and our sense of self, on some misguided mission to be invulnerable, to please, to care-take, or just to belong...Somewhere along the way, our vision of ourselves loses focus. Therapy can help create a new template for living. Research shows us that the brain can actually re-wire itself in the context of a secure relationship, developing new capacities for self-soothing, obtaining perspective, and being intimate. I believe that all suffering bears embedded gifts, if we look hard enough.

Child Therapists
Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
