Has life stress reached a peak? Sometimes we need a safe place to sort through it all. No one teaches us what to do with
anxiety
, depression, anger, grief, or pain. What to do with setbacks, lack of confidence, or loneliness. How to fix a broken relationship, or how to get yourself out of a difficult situation you feel stuck in. Together we can sort through your current life stress, bring understanding, new perspectives, wisdom, and healing.

"I wish I had done this years ago". The harsh reality is that emotional struggles to this day continue to be stigmatized and shamed. The brain is an organ, and like any other physiological system and it can require some fine tuning from time to time. Whether you or a loved one have been under the grips of
anxiety
, depression, difficulty sleeping, or simply sub-optimal functioning, we can have an open, honest discussion about whether medication is the right answer. Throughout my 14 years in psychiatry, I've had no greater joy than to see my patients improve. It's never too late to get better.

Many people seek out therapy for different reasons sometimes for loss, trauma, life transitions,
anxiety
and depression, feeling stuck in life, and sometimes for help adding coping skills for day to day life. My approach to therapy is mainly rooted in CBT and Mindfulness, working with you to examine how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected and how by navigating through changes in our lives with a more present and focus lens we can minimize
anxiety
and add to our coping skills toolbox. By taking a mindfulness approach, we will find ways to navigate through past experiences and the curve balls life throws at us.

Both can help loosen the grip of depression and
anxiety
and make us more alive to life's possibilities.
Sometimes we don’t understand the feelings coming up in us. The world can be unjust and hard, and things happen that make it tough to trust ourselves or others, don’t they? Sometimes we wonder if we'll always feel lonely. We might ask why our relationships turn out the way they do, or why we try the same things over and over. When we’re waiting for the other shoe to drop or when life feels muddled or grey, we can wonder if this is all there is.

As a BIPOC woman, do you feel isolated, scrutinized, and uncomfortable in your own skin? Does it take monumental effort to get through everyday tasks? Do personal issues come between you and your professional goals? Have you experienced traumatic events that continue to weigh heavily on your mind long after the event has passed? You are not lazy, unmotivated, or unfocused. These may be symptoms of
anxiety
, depression, and trauma-induced disfunctions, including those caused by the repeated micro-aggressions experienced by sexual, gender, racial, and ethnic minorities. Therapy can help.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
