Additionally, I have a special interest in working with families facing an Alzheimer's / dementia diagnosis, as well as issues of stage fright/peak performance or test anxiety with creatives, performers, and students.
*NOTE: Currently full, but spots do open up over time. Feel free to inquire.* Although my approach to counseling draws from a variety of models and approaches (including EMDR and interpersonal neurobiology, among others), all are rooted in the fundamental principles of non-judgmental acceptance, authenticity, and experience. Beyond the exploration of old patterns of beliefs and behaviors, my focus is on helping clients find solutions. My ultimate goal as a therapist is to help my clients develop knowledge and tools that will facilitate sustained growth long after therapy has ended.

Hello, my name is Catherine Stansbury, LMSW. I am a social worker and an EMDR Trained Therapist. I practice at Divine Mercy Counseling, a group practice in Austin, Texas. My clinical supervisor is Kasey Shaw Salyer, LCSW-S. I specialize in trauma therapy for individual adults, ages 18-100. I have a special interest in older adults and their caregivers, since caregiving is what led me to become a social worker. It is my honor and my joy to work with persons who have carried terrible burdens of trauma and pain for many years; and to help them unload those burdens, and find healing, hope, and peace.

In times of stress, we tend to forget that healing comes from the inside out! Major changes such as marital conflict, divorce, dementia in a loved one, anxiety, or depression may give more questions than answers. Depth psychology provides deeper understanding of your life. Often solutions are crying out from your own heart if only someone would listen. I will listen and together we will find strategies, resources, and solutions so that you have the life and relationships you want. I offer years of experience working with children and adolescents, families, and crisis intervention. Call for free consultation.

Life is inevitably composed of episodes of change. From new experiences and life events to trauma and loss, transitions in life challenge ones' emotional balance. When first entering therapy I believe that it is natural to be unable to identify all of these feelings. Often you may only know that “something is off”. My goal is to sit with you through uncertainty and walk with you through the process of self-exploration and healing. My two main passions are working with those experiencing grief and loss and/or dual diagnosis serious mental illness and substance use disorder.

Have you endured a painful or sudden loss? Are you experiencing tremendous difficulty adjusting to death, illness, or other significant life transition? Do you feel scared- or even convinced- that things will never improve? Have loved ones tried to reach out, but you don't feel like they understand your situation? There's a good chance that you are tired of "being strong" or tired of feeling alone. Likewise, there's a good chance that you need some emotional support during this trying time.

**I am currently accepting new clients for Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy only** Living can often land you on a different course than the one you expected. There are moments in life when you feel lost and unsure where you took a wrong turn. Maybe you’ve been feeling down or worried but are hesitant to bring it up to family and friends out of fear of burdening them. In these moments, it's important to have a space where you are safe to be yourself, a place to remind you that where you are at is not who you are.

I use a cultural relational model of psychotherapy for adults, and a Modern Analytically Informed Interpersonal Processing approach to groups with a special interest in Chronic and Catastrophic Illness and Disability including where those issues intersect couple's issues. My work with couples is informed by John Gottman, Harville Hendrix and Sue Johnson. Using these research and treatment models with you and your partner around issues of communication and attachment can help you to resolve problems, and achieve closer connection with each other along with a better quality of life. John Lennon nailed it: "Life is what happens when we are busy making other plans." Without warning we my find ourselves dealing with the loss of a relationship, a job, or a difficult diagnosis. Perhaps parenting, which used to be so easy, does not seem to be working. For others, years of carrying so much anxiety and stress has now become too heavy and is getting in the way. Possibly life itself has turned upside down, magnifying everything else to the point that it is just overwhelming. I get it and can offer support, skills and a path towards reclaiming your well-being and a life worth living.

Alzheimer's Therapists

What are the first-line treatment options for Alzheimer’s disease?

The first-line treatment for Alzheimer’s disease is often medication, which may be prescribed based on the severity of the disease. These include cholinesterase inhibitors, memantine, or a combination of the two. Behavioral treatments can help people cope with emotional distress, such as anxiety or anger, and explore lifestyle changes related to housing, caregiving, sleep, and finances.

When to seek treatment for Alzheimer’s?

It’s best to seek treatment at the first signs of dementia. Early warning signs of Alzheimer’s include memory problems, such as forgetting appointments or directions, as well as trouble concentrating, paying attention, retrieving words, and carrying out daily household tasks. An early diagnosis can help people slow the progression of the disease with treatment and plan for the future in terms of housing, support, finances, and legality.

Are there specific medications to treat Alzheimer’s?

Medications approved by the FDA to manage symptoms of Alzheimer’s include galantamine, rivastigmine, and donepezil for mild to moderate Alzheimer’s, and memantine, donepezil, and the rivastigmine patch for moderate to severe Alzheimer’s. These drugs can help manage the disease, but no drug currently cures the disease. Medications recently approved by the FDA, such aducanumab and lecanemab may slow the disease course, but aspects of their effectiveness are still debated.

Are there natural treatments for Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s disease cannot be cured via natural remedies (nor via medication), but some lifestyle habits can help forestall it or slow its progression. Lifestyle activities that can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease include regular exercise, a healthy, well-rounded diet, stimulating cognitive activity, time spent socializing, adequate sleep, and stress management as needed.
