My clinical training interests and experience with individuals in distress has progressed an authentic passion for providing support during tumultuous periods as people manage difficult matters including, but not limited to substance use complications and threats of violence.
Sadness, rage, sorrow, loneliness, and disappointment are all emotions we will, at some time in our lives, be forced to confront and work through. Some people experience these feelings for much longer than they anticipate, to the point they become disruptive to their day-to-day lives. People often do not seek assistance because they are hindered by feelings of shame, guilt, and fear of being judged. My goal is to provide you with a space free from danger and criticism, so you may work through challenging feelings and investigate ways to succeed any challenges.

I enjoy working with children, adolescents and adults who are dealing with life issues that result in depression, anger, and an inability to function in their daily lives. I also enjoy working with couples and families. I believe that families function as a system and when one family member is out of sync, the entire family is disrupted. In my practice, I see children as young as 3 years of age. Play is the "language of the child" and Play Therapy allows children to work through their issues in a non-threatening environment.

Life is chaotic enough without having to fight yourself to get things done. You have good intentions, really. You wake up wanting to show up but then your mind gets in the way. You try but you feel like a failure. It's so busy in your mind you get lost and lose track. You're preoccupied and trying to find the solution. You're seen as withdrawn, anxious, lazy, temperamental, unreliable- any number of things. Except you aren't! You just can't get a handle on your brain. When you're drowning in replays of your traumas or failures and constantly feel like a letdown it's hard to get a grasp on life in the moment. It can be different.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
