I have received training in trauma-informed, attachment-based therapy such as EMDR, TBRI and interpersonal neurobiology.
I provide guidance for my clients to heal from the impact of stressful or hard life circumstances by forming healthy connections with themselves and others. I chose the name of my counseling practice intentionally for this reason. Most aspen trees grow in large clonal colonies, sharing the same root system. I believe that we as humans were wired for connection like the aspen tree. Sometimes our internal or external connections can be stressed, broken, wounded, or vacant. Counseling offers us a place to create healing space so that we can find greater integration with ourselves and others.

Life can be challenging and sometimes things happen that make it even harder; whether that “thing” is a traumatic event, depression, anxiety, or a goal one is trying to meet, counseling offers an outlet to work through these challenges. I believe that traumatic events come in many forms and are defined by the feelings and long-term effects left on the person who has experienced the event. Depression and Anxiety hide amongst the strong, often clients initially feel “I should be able to do this on my own”, I invite you to move past that initial urge and call today.

I believe that every person is capable of healing. Therapy should be a partnership between therapist and client, and together, we will find a therapeutic method that works well for your family. My primary areas of focus include working with adults, children and families to address needs related to behavioral struggles, depression, anxiety, and relationship disruptions. I believe that play is the universal language of children, and that through play therapy experiences, children are able to make sense of their world and heal.

The way we are raised, the we are taught how to behave, and how we experience it. This is what makes every one of use unique. You are living a daily battle in your head about what you can eat, how much you should exercise, if you are worthy of taking up space. You are consumed by counting calories and by the negative voice inside that tells you, you’ll never be good enough or thin enough, smart enough or pretty enough. You are fed up with how the society/culture tells you how you should look and feel and behave. Your behaviors have you feeling exhausted and depleted and you wonder how you can go on another day. Others may think you have it all together on the outside, but the mental torture inside is killing you and feel like your life is shrinking.

As Dr. Irvin D. Yalom says, client and therapist are "fellow travelers" and I would love to travel with you on this journey. I believe you have the strength and power to change your life, but sometimes stuff gets in the way. I want to help you remove those blocks! I'm a relational therapist who uses attachment theory, some cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a dash of dialectic behavior therapy (DBT), and quite a bit of humor in the therapy room. How do we get started on this journey together?

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
