Are you carrying pain that others can’t see. You may feel alone, stuck in cycles of anxiety, shame, or relationship struggles that keep repeating. Often these patterns begin in environments where emotional needs weren’t fully seen or supported, leaving you in survival mode, overthinking, shutting down, or doubting yourself. Therapy can be a space to understand these patterns with compassion rather than judgment. I help adults explore the roots of these experiences and reconnect with their sense of self so they can move toward greater clarity, balance, and authenticity. I am here to help you through this in a safe space.

Has something happened to you that you can barely tell yourself, let alone anyone else? Do you feel haunted by the past and oscillate between agitation and hypervigilance to exhaustion and depression? You might be suffering from the effects of trauma.
Trauma hijacks the mind, the self and the present by keeping us frozen in the past. The good news is trauma doesn't have to get the last word. We can heal our traumatized brains and nervous systems by working with them instead of against them.

Hey there, name is Michaela! As humans, sometimes we feel as if we’re stuck inside a family board game favorite, The Game of Life. As the game plays on, we’re all just hoping to move from one square space to another without throwing down the cards. Instead of being your opponent, I want to be your teammate and support you square space, by square space, until you feel like a winner.

While I work with a wide variety of clients, I specialize in folks with a history of trauma, those who have experienced intimate partner violence, and sexual assault.
Prioritizing yourself, and your wellness can be difficult, especially in our turbulent and polarized world. I would be honored to help you create a safe space where you can completely be yourself, and accepted for who that is. I am always amazed at the resilience and potential each of my clients have, and I would love to help you tap into that. I believe that an authentic relationship between the counselor and client is really important for change, and I know I am not always the right fit for all clients, so if I'm not your cup of tea, I will help you find the counselor that is! I also provide PCLC supervision under my practice.

I work with individuals who find themselves stuck in a pattern of destructive and repetitive behaviors which they cannot seem to stop. Perhaps you've experienced acute or prolonged trauma, such as domestic or sexual violence, and you've learned to cope with alcohol, substances, or harmful behavior. You need someone who will listen and help you navigate through life transitions, relationship issues, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicidal ideation which seem to be all connected to feeling trapped and lost, alone and scared and you just need someone to sit with you and help you heal from the deep pain enveloping you.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
