I specialize in treating children and adolescents who are experiencing anxiety, depression, adhd, anger issues, divorce, trauma, grief & loss, family conflict, and more.
I believe we all experience life struggles as we strive to find significance, fulfillment, and meaning. When overwhelmed individuals, seek counseling for various reasons--to improve their lives, find balance, solve a particular problem, gain understanding of themselves and others, or work on specific areas of concern such as: self-esteem, anxiety, stress management, anger, grief/loss, relationship concerns, family conflict, and/or general life transitions. I emphasize a collaborative counseling environment, built on trust, safety, and compassion. I incorporate a variety of counseling theories, techniques and modalities to reach the client's potential and goals.

I believe that play is a way for children to communicate and that through directive and non-directive play children can work through many issues that they might be facing.
Stephanie has comprehensive experience of working with clients of all ages but has concentrated on working with children , adolescents, and young adults with a history of abuse and neglect. She has also supported families and couples that need assistance with co-parenting, blending families, and other communication or adjustment related issues. Some of the clients Stephanie has worked with have struggled with trauma, PTSD, ADHD, behavioral issues, anxiety, anger, and other relational problems. It is important to Stephanie to provide individual or family mental health resolutions that meet the specific needs of each client.

"Are you, your child , or family experiencing emotional distress related to a trauma?" "Have you, your child , or family recently experienced the death of a loved one?" "Are you, your child , or family experiencing anxiety symptoms that are creating conflict within the family or social system and you feel lost in what to do?" As the parent of a young child I appreciate what it means to put your whole heart & soul into another being. It takes an immense amount of energy to maintain balance when complications arise, threatening to jeopardize the hopes and dreams we have for ourselves, our children , and our family system.

To get help for the young child finding it difficult to separate, or the teenager struggling defiantly to achieve independence, or the couple wishing to save their marriage; the first step is a call to my office or a visit to my website.
I treat a wide range of behavioral, emotional, and psychological problems, working with all ages - individuals, couples, and families. I have helped developmentally delayed children and their families, as well as troubled teenagers in need of residential treatment. I participated in research regarding successful parenting practices, and have facilitated positive change in some children by working just with the parents.

Child Therapists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
