Personal, confidential and interactive describe the way I practice psychology. Gently helping people unlock their prisons of addiction, anxiety and depression, I enjoy seeing them achieve their dreams. I believe body, mind and spirit have to be in balance, and that each person, although unique, is embedded in and influenced by family and culture. I practice tailoring psychotherapy to the needs of the individual. One size does not fit all.

Neurofeedback is an evidence-based treatment which has been effectively used alternatively or in conjunction with medication to treat a number of neurologically based conditions including Lyme Disease, Post-concussion syndrome, various forms of Migraine, and Traumatic Brain Injury.
Many clients would prefer a deeper understanding of the symptoms they or their child experiences. Underlying each condition are patterns of information which are particular to each person's brain, and are identifiable through neuropsychological evaluation and neuroimaging using qEEG. Understanding how your brain functions provides you with choices for treatment which otherwise may not exist. I believe that an evidence based approach to treatment which begins with a thorough evaluation is the first step in helping clients achieve a positive therapeutic outcome. Having dual training in clinical and neuropsychology, Dr. Tignor can provide a wide range of traditional and alternative treatment options. .

While I am trained and experienced in evidence based practices, I realize the basis for results in therapy is a trusting and nonjudgmental relationship. While supporting clients in personal growth by supporting identification of values, strengths and goals, I emphasize practical strategies that can be generalized to address the challenges of everyday life. I work with teens and adults including professionals who are looking for support in managing career related stress, and parents seeking support to enhance family relationships as well and strategies to support their children with mental health or behavioral challenges.

If you feel like you're standing on the edge of a life transition as a result of losing yourself along the way, unhealthy family dynamics, a recent break-up, or life just took unplanned turns, I'm so glad you're here. Feelings of worry, grief, or resentment can take hold when you feel out of control when your strategies for managing life are no longer working. If you want to feel satisfied with the life you're living, feel confident about your own strength, and if your goal is to be well, let's get started. Transitions are uncomfortable opportunities to re-design the life you want.

Welcome! If you are motivated to decrease stress, pain and anxiety you have come to the right place. I am an occupational therapist with a clinical specialty in biofeedback. I teach people how to quiet their nervous system producing a calming effect. People learn how to relax muscles, breathe slower, lower their heart rate and blood pressure and warm their hands-all physical responses opposite to those we experience while under stress. Using sensors that pick up this information to feedback moment to moment changes people can see how they are doing and make remarkable changes in their behavior.

Clients (or their families) typically present with concerns about cognitive functioning or behavior and the impact of such on their daily lives such as at work, at school, at home, or socially. They often have questions about diagnoses and what services or accommodations would be helpful for them. They have concerns about the future and how to best manage their difficulties. Ideal patients are motivated to work together to find answers that make sense and strategies that they can actually use in daily life.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Therapists

When should someone seek treatment for a traumatic brain injury?

People should seek a diagnosis and treatment after a head injury, especially if they were unconscious, and an early diagnosis can lead to a better recovery. Signs of a concussion include headaches, nausea or vomiting, exhaustion, dizziness, vision problems, sensitivity to light and sound, problems with attention and memory, brain fog, unusual irritability or sadness, and unusual sleep patterns.

What’s the most common treatment for a traumatic brain injury?

Treatment for a traumatic brain injury will be different depending on the severity of the problem. For mild injuries, treatment may involve rest and over-the-counter pain or headache medication. For moderate or severe injuries, treatment may involve stabilization, medication, and rehabilitative therapies such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, cognitive therapy, and counseling.

How long does it take to recover from traumatic brain injury?

The recovery time for a traumatic brain injury depends on the individual and the severity and nature of the injury; the length of time spent unconscious is often an indicator of severity. Recovery time for mild injuries may be a week or two while recovery time for more severe injuries may be six months to two years. Research suggests that the vast majority of recovery occurs in the first two years after an injury; recovery after that time frame is less certain.

What if a traumatic brain injury is left untreated?

If a traumatic brain injury is left untreated, it can lead to long-term physical and mental health problems. Physical problems may include dizziness, headaches, vision, healing, or speech loss, and an elevated risk of dementia. Psychological problems may include impairments of memory, judgment, and decision-making, depression, aggression, poor impulse control, and personality changes.
