Forty years of practice have taught me that we humans pretty much learn to be who we are. With a tip of my hat to my alma mater, the University of Minnesota, for setting me on the right track, I practice what is now known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in which we identify and challenge old, dysfunctional habits by integrating our emotions, thoughts and behaviors while learning new ways of coping with our issues. It is exciting and fulfilling to share in my clients' / patients' journeys from guilt, depression, anxiety, stress, trauma or dysfunction to living proactively, mindfully, and joyfully.

Specialties include the following: helping people with PTSD, anxiety, emotion regulation, depression, children who have experienced abuse, and parents who have children with oppositional and aggressive behaviors.
Often, change comes from a place of pain and discomfort. Challenging experiences reveal and strengthen valuable qualities within oneself. However, there are times people need different perspectives or skills to overcome challenges. I aim to offer an accepting space for people to resolve uncomfortable experiences and to move towards what matters the most.

The work I do is somatic-based, client-focused, and trauma-informed.
Your brain is a treasure trove of gifts just waiting to be unleashed. Previous life events may be blinding you to these gifts and to your own potential. If you are ready, I can help you acknowledge and release your past experiences as you uncover these gifts and release the chains of your limiting beliefs. Powerful mind-body techniques, including EMDR, Brainspotting, and mindfulness, will allow you to change your life by tuning into your natural healing capacities. Once you do the work and learn the skills, you will no longer be defined by these events and will chart your new path…without unending years of therapy.

I specialize in serving first responders, military personnel, veterans, and persons experiencing trauma, intimate partner violence, sexual abuse, complicated grief, post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, and other mental health struggles.
The power to change your life lies in your mindset – how you process experiences and the feelings attached to them. Change can seem overwhelming. We can be stuck in the same patterns void of any progress. If you are ready to take control of your life and process uncomfortable experiences head-on, I can help. Choosing your thoughts and feeling your feelings can undo negative patterns and behaviors to create the life you want to live. Therapy is a partnership that takes place in a compassionate and confidential environment, where you can identify and overcome the negative beliefs and patterns that stifle your growth.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
