I prefer to work with people in the long-term, finding that helps us get to the roots of our difficulties. In part, because there is a deeper connection in the therapeutic relationship. I personally know the value of feeling safe in therapy. Building trust with your therapist is key to embarking on the journey of growth and self-discovery. Compassion and empathy are core to who I am, and I bring these attributes to each session to develop an authentic connection with you. Whether you want to work on PTSD, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, domestic violence, grief, eating or body image difficulties, I am here to help.

Many people struggle with trauma. At times individuals lose sight of their dreams, goals, and sense of self. Flashbacks, dissociation, nightmares, anxiety, hypervigilance, depression, and inability to focus can all be symptoms of trauma. People with trauma struggle with intimate relationships, boundaries, and communication. Many individuals feel alone and misunderstood. They usually want to be close and trust others; however, their trauma gets in the way. Learning to grow, trust, reduce negative symptoms, and learn new coping skills and boundaries are essential to the healing process, so you can live life again.

Colby has specialized training in Sex Addiction (CSAT-Candidate) and Betrayal Trauma (CPTT-Candidate).
Colby is passionate about life and about helping others to discover that same passion. He recognizes that we all go through life experiences that shape and form us into who we are today. Through those experiences, we can become stuck, discouraged, overwhelmed, feeling helpless, and hopeless. This can keep us from being able to maximize our happiness and joy. Colby uses a combination of therapy modalities to help us understand why we are the way we are, come to accept who we are, and then challenge ourselves to become our best self through intrapersonal and interpersonal growth.

A history of trauma, including the lack of fulfillment of emotional needs, is what interferes with our ability for successful, intimate relationships.
As a result of my own personal and professional exploration over the last 40+ years, I work most effectively with individuals who have not succeeded in establishing and sustaining nourishing, satisfying, intimate, committed, relationships in their lives. At this stage of my career, I am interested in working with individuals or couples who want to enhance their capacity for meaningful, intimate relationships.

Life can be tough! Whether you feel like you are trying your hardest, or feel like things rarely go your way, we all go through multiple emotions on a daily basis. I truly feel that we all have resilience and that sometimes we need a reminder of how strong and capable we really are.

I have personal experience with relationship stress, trauma, chronic illness, and loss, and an academic emphasis in trauma-informed care.
Seeking help in therapy takes strength and bravery, and I applaud clients for taking the first steps. It's easy to be hard on ourselves about how we feel or how we respond to our experiences. Sometimes we feel stuck, individually or in our relationships, and it can be hard to see a new path. I'm passionate about helping clients reach their potential to grow, change the patterns that no longer serve them, and move past the obstacles in their way. I work with clients to process and heal, create greater connections in their relationships, communicate more effectively, create healthy boundaries, and move through life more confidently.

Working with someone who understands child/teenage development, mood/emotional/behavior issues, and trauma can make all the difference.
Your child means the world to you. You’ve worked and invested so much throughout the years for their benefit and well being. Despite all the planning and parenting preparation you did, there are somethings that you weren’t prepared for: Constant arguments at home and meltdowns. Emails/calls from the school of your child struggling with focus and sitting still. A child that worries and is scared so much of the time. When your teenager says to their friends “I just want to die.” How to help your child through big life changes such as divorce, a move, or the death of a loved one. Or, if someone has purposely hurt him/her.

The work of reconnecting to meaning in your life, healing from trauma, or repairing a relationship is not a one-size-fits-all approach.
Take a breath... Just s l o w d o w n for a second- You made it this far, which takes courage. Good for you. That you took the step to come looking for a therapist means that some part of you heard it when your friend said they're worried about you, or when your partner said they think it's time the two of you found someone to talk to. It means there have just been too many days where you felt like an observer in your life or like this was the day you would crack under the pressure of holding yourself together. It means you're ready to build a life that feels more rich, full, and meaningful; a life not driven by conflict or fear.

My work is influenced by many trauma-informed practices including attachment theory, object relations, EMDR (trained), family systems, and internal family systems.
I work with young adults, families, and couples helping them to shed light on themselves and the systems of which they are a part. I have worked predominately with clients experiencing symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety, bipolar, addictive disorders, and personality disorders. I have a background in wilderness therapy and experiential treatment and love to introduce creative, alternative modes of expression to my clients, including yoga movement, narrative, and outdoor based therapies (walk and talk). By the end of our first session, most of my clients feel relieved and hopeful for their next steps.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
