My passion is helping people work through trauma so that it isn't their entire existence.
At The Power of You Counseling, we focus on YOU. What are your goals for therapy? What do you want to change? How do you need help? Often, life happens and we lose ourselves. Or, life has happened and you have never found yourself. I am here to help you find you. There is no issue too big or too small. Everyone has something and it is not a competition about who has it worse. I often hear there are people out there with "real issues". Your issues are real and you deserve to heal. I am here to walk beside you. I want to support you on your journey. Let's figure this out together.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a trauma focused therapy designed to help an individual work through "unbreakable" dysfunctional patterns and traumatic past experiences that negatively affect their present life either through flashbacks, intrusive memories, nightmares, fear, anxiety, poor boundaries, addictions, compulsive behaviors, or negative patterns in relationships.
Not accepting new patients at this time. I chose to become a counselor because there is a great deal of hurt and pain in the world, but not many effective resources for healing. I have seen many hurt and angry people genuinely desire change but feel so stuck, they don't even know where to begin. Throughout my journey to become a counselor, I have learned that sometimes hope can be really hard to believe in and change can be really difficult. However, when hope is found it can be a great source of strength. When change is sought after, the stuck feeling begins to loosen and the true healing begins.

Relationship problems, anxiety, and trauma are some of the areas that clients present with.
Is anxiety getting the best of you? Are you feeling depressed, with low energy and motivation? Or, could it be that your most important relationships are suffering from a lack of emotional connection, with frequent arguments or stony silence? We all have times in life where things may not be going the way we envision, but if you feel stuck in a bad place, there is hope. Many people find therapy helps to get them back on track. It can be a bit scary to think about taking this step, but it can make a difference.

I specialize in working with adults, adolescents, children, families and couples who face domestic violence, co-dependency, depression, anxiety, trauma, LGBTQ, parenting, loss/grief, divorce, anger management, family dysfunction, blending families, and military life style/reintegration.
Many therapists like myself venture into the mental health field motivated by their own experiences. Growing up in a family that struggled with addictions, grief/loss, co-dependency, violence and dysfunction, I existed in life feeling lonely, worthless, and empty for too many years. I turned my life upside down and reconstructed my life based upon me as I was truly created. Living life whole, as a spiritually connected being, brought me to love, accept and respect myself. In this place LIFE IS GOOD! I know the path that leads to this place.

I believe that seeking support and guidance during challenging times is a natural part of life. As a seasoned mental health professional with extensive experience in counseling, I am dedicated to assisting individuals in navigating trauma, daily stressors, and other personal difficulties. It is important to recognize that seeking help does not mean there is something inherently wrong with you, as we all face struggles at some point in our lives.

I am also now providing EMDR therapy for trauma.
Everyone deserves to feel accepted and loved for who they are now and encouraged to take steps toward becoming the person they want to be. No matter how you may have been raised or how you may have been treated in the past, you deserve to feel safe and connected to people who care and that can start with a therapeutic relationship. I believe that healing and hope is possible in every situation. That may look differently for each person and it may not be what you expect. Working with foster teens has shown me what a huge difference unconditional love and support can make in a young person's life.

Grounded in mindful & meditative instruction, my approach integrates Nondualism-inspired self-inquiry, MBCT, trauma therapies such as EMDR, Internal Family Systems & Brainspotting.
You feel different than others and there’s so much going on inside. Perhaps your thoughts and emotions are just too much. The people, places and activities that may have been fulfilling and safe in the past, are now what you would prefer to avoid. Others appear happy, but that same happiness feels beyond your reach. Maybe you recognize the need for some change, but enacting change seems impossible. Are you ready for your mind and body to be at peace in this chaotic world and to find your true self again? It is possible to access the wonder and creative energy of youth and to have a new understanding of your life.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
