In the face of the unthinkable, seeking help is an act of remarkable courage. Whether you've experienced the loss of a child, a spouse, a loved one, or even a career, the weight of trauma, grief, and hopelessness can suffocate. Motivation to heal may seem distant, and you find yourself trapped in memories, nightmares, and intense fear and anxiety. Promises of a brighter tomorrow remain unfulfilled. Life is too precious to stay trapped in the exhausting grip of grief. Let me be your guide toward the path of hope.

Waitlist for new clients
Advances in trauma treatment and nervous system regulation have made great strides in recent years and I actively research various methods to help resolve them.
If you have had trouble communicating with your therapist/others or with traditional talk therapy approaches, you have come to the right place. My name is Dena Ewing and I am a board certified art therapist that specializes in trauma therapy and somatic practices to resolve emotional pain and suffering. Many people I treat have often tried different therapies in the past with limited success. My approach to resolving long standing anxiety, trauma and/or depression is by taking a "bottom up" approach, meaning we work with gently connecting to the body first to let it inform the next steps in healing.

Using primarily CBT and EMDR, I help adults with trauma, anxiety, and issues in pregnancy/postpartum.
Accepting New Clients! You strive to be the best, the best partner, the best parent, the best at the office, but you always feel like you fall short. Will life always be this chaotic and exhausting? Despite your best efforts, there never seems to be enough time in the day. After caring for so many others in your life, you struggle to care for yourself. You're constantly running on empty. Although you recognize the patterns in your life you don't want to repeat, you can't seem to stop the cycle. In the past, you've tried to make changes on your own, but nothing works long-term. You're stuck and not sure what to do next.

Life can bring great challenges, and many people are experiencing marriage difficulties, a history of destructive relationships with significant others, religious trauma, difficult adjustments to life changes and feelings of being stuck and uncertain about how to move forward in life.
Life is challenging and sometimes overwhelming for all of us! I believe everyone has within themselves the ability and inner wisdom to successfully navigate life's challenges if given the opportunity and necessary tools for change. Therapy is an opportunity for me to walk with clients through life challenges by helping them identify and meet their own desired life goals for change and personal growth while helping them to reclaim their own life story. By providing a safe place and personal support, I help clients explore the context of their own life experiences and the impact of those experiences on their life and relationships.

I am nationally certified in TF-CBT for children who've experienced trauma.
I believe that one of the bravest things that you can do is begin to understand and take control of your life story. Though reaching out for counseling is oftentimes intimidating, it can also be the beginning of something great, in which you identify the obstacles in your life and bring yourself greater fulfillment. If you've noticed yourself feeling stuck, without motivation, and in need of a plan, I'll be there to listen and help you take the steps towards discovering the new you.

My purpose is not to understand what it is like to walk in your shoes, but to come alongside you and walk with you together through your difficulties and figure out healthy strategies together. We will set goals and objectives together to formulate a viable solution for your situation. I have experience working with individuals, couples and groups dealing with issues such as depression, anxiety, relationships, and behavioral problems.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
