When you've got that stuck feeling, when you're not sure how to make a change, when you need support - these are times I can help. I work from an interactive and empowering approach in therapy where we establish goals and work for change that matches your needs, your life, and your context. I can help uncover your natural resiliency and take steps towards a more fulfilling life. Many clients say they are surprised when they are able to break old patterns. Therapy should not be mysterious, nor does it need to last a long time. Click on my site for more info.

My experiences encompass a broad range of areas including depression and/or anxiety, physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect, attachment and bonding, child and adolescent behavioral difficulties, family-of-origin, trauma and/or post-traumatic stress disorder, divorce and/or stepfamily, grief, adjustment difficulties, adoption, addictions, and neurobiofeedback work.
Therapy is a spiritual journey to me. I see my role as the therapist to be the mirror to the client, reflecting back to them what I hear them saying about their own knowing, essence, passion, pain, and potential. It is my role as the therapist to sit with the client in the midst of his/her journey and allow him/her the opportunity to get to know and see him/herself, which ultimately leads to a process of loving his/herself. This is part of the soul journey: learning to love ourselves which indeed is a rewarding experience.

I am trained in and use evidence-based treatment modalities such as EMDR, somatic experiencing, yoga, and mindfulness-based trauma informed CBT to shift and modify cognitions, physiological reactions, emotions, and help clients get "unstuck.
Inevitably, we all encounter periods in our lives in which what we've learned to that point isn't sufficient for the challenges we now face. I believe therapy can be a safe, supportive environment in which to better understand ourselves and the world and to revisit what we want in life and how to get there. Whether you are dealing with significant anxiety or depression, or simply need a new environment to learn your way through new challenges with a helping eye and ear, I bring a humorous, creative, curious and open-minded approach to helping you progress through life's challenges.

I have two main areas of focus in my practice. The first is to "help make order out of your eating". The second is to help restore broken relationships. Struggles in both of these areas can lead to unhealthy levels of anxiety and depression, also within my scope of expertise. My goal is to help my clients regain control of their lives by empowering them to use the physical, emotional, social and spiritual assets they already have to their highest potential. I also do intensive trauma work using the Wall Work method designed by James Runyan.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
