I have experience working with depression, anxiety abuse, trauma and other life issues.
Everyone has experienced pain and disappointment in their life. For some of us that pain is keeping us from the life we want. You may have learned to cope in ways that are no longer helpful and have become "stuck." I consider it an honor to hear your story and help you navigate what is keeping you from moving forward.

Many of us have feelings of not being good enough, or that we are bad, not lovable, not smart enough, not worthy, etc. These feelings can come from past trauma and/or from living with a narcissist. Because we have feelings like these, we think we have to do things for others so they will like us. It's exhausting. These feelings can create self doubt, confusion, anxiety, depression, fear, anger, etc. Your life doesn't have to be like this. Therapy can help you rid yourself of these beliefs and give you clarity and happiness. I've been successfully helping people with these issues thru online, EMDR based therapy, for many years.

I am also certified in Cognitive Processing Therapy, the main treatment for trauma endorsed by the VA.
For many clients, my approach results in resolution of their challenges in 3-4 months. I’m Sandra Kroll, and I believe you can improve your mental health by tackling your problems head-on and looking at your situation from new angles. Life transitions (divorce, medical challenges, retirement, parenthood, emerging adulthood) are many times highly stressful. I can help you find balance and happiness in these trying times, by examining your choices and values. Clients often tell me, “I’ve never thought about it that way before." I named my practice “Refreshing Perspectives” because that’s what you’ll find when you come to me.

At Changing Pathways, I work with people of all ages. I have a special interest working with “littles.” I work with littles as young as two. I have a passion working with children ages two to seven; focusing on non-directive play therapy to promote change. I understand that change is a developmental and lifetime process. I enjoy working with teenagers and adults; working through symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, and loss. I have completed level 1 of Theraplay training, an attachment based modality. I believe it is important to explore a holistic viewpoint, including family, environment, and attachment.

I specialize in women's issues including self-image and growth, trauma recovery, miscarriage and perinatal loss, postpartum depression and adjustment, intimate relationship (pre/post and during), parenting, friendship, and family of origin relationships, grief and all of life's stressors.
Sometimes life gets hard, and we get lost; it is my desire that no one is alone during those times. Therapy is not a magical healing but rather as Mary Pipher wrote, "Therapy gives clients a safe relationship in which to explore their inner world and to consider taking risks in their external one." I work with couples to enhance their marriages, parents as they raise their children, and individuals to process grief, establish healthy relationships, thinking patterns, and boundaries to overcome anger, anxiety, or depression.

By using techniques from acceptance and commitment, CBT/trauma informed, and narrative approaches, I offer a space that is free from oppressive ideologies, acceptance and open to whatever presents for you in session.
Want to be more authentic? As a gay man, I understand how difficult it can be to understand and feel confident in your identity. I bring that lived experience and empathy to my therapeutic work. Gender identity, sex and sexuality, relationships, body image and self-esteem, along with depression and anxiety that tangle with them, are things that I can help you work through. My goal is to help you be more kind to yourself, and to help you find your authentic self so you can live the life you want.

You have your life together, but inside, you feel you are crumbling. On the outside, no one notices. All they see is someone who is responsible and is able to do the things that need to be done. You make it through the day, only to get home and have a wave of emotions drown you. It has not always been like this, the person that was on the outside was the way you felt on the inside. But things seemed to shift. You try to think, when did this happen? And then you realize, you know the answer. It was that one situation. The situation you have tried to bury because even just thinking about it brings you back into the moment.

I believe in providing all of my clients with the best therapy possible by using an approach that fits who they are as a person. I want my clients to have a safe, open space to be themselves, ask for what they need, and feel comfortable every time they come in. Therapy is a place of vulnerability that only works if the client can fully engage in the process and feel confident in their therapist. I strive to help clients reach a space where real healing is achieved and to have them leave sessions feeling understood and closer to their goals.

You're not broken, you're just human. We all experience difficulty throughout our lives, and when life feels hard, it can be so easy to get caught up in thoughts like, "It'll never get better," or to feel anxious, overwhelmed, and discouraged. Before too long, you might realize you're far from the life you'd imagined, or the person you'd hoped to be.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
