I specialize in anxiety, depression, trauma, and self-empowerment.
Starting therapy may be unknown, and unknown things are overwhelming at times. Clients may not know where to start or feel like going to therapy may not help. I strive to help clients discover the best version of themselves, meeting them where they are in whatever they are facing. My intention as a therapist is to build trust in creating a safe space where each client feels empowered, encouraged, and challenged in a positive way. Growth is a major part of life, and as a therapist, I allow clients to find growth within themselves along with building a strong therapeutic relationship.

As a clinician I have worked with adults and children experiencing anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma, and substance abuse.
Life is full of challenges and sometimes it may feel like those challenges are just too much. Many of us struggle to maintain a balance with the many different aspects of our lives. We juggle work life, home life, parenthood, finances, personal issues, etc. Then, somehow we're supposed to fit in self-care. Does the lack of balance cause you to experience days where you're too anxious to rest, too exhausted to get out of bed, or both at the same time? Are you struggling to find solutions to all the issues mentioned above? Let's work together to get you grounded and find your balance!

I frequently work with people facing anxiety, depression, and trauma.
I believe that counseling is a collaborative partnership between the counselor and client, and the foundation for this partnership is trust. I strive to create a safe and comfortable space in which my clients can untangle life’s struggles and any resulting patterns that are no longer serving them, as well as learn skills to empower them to take charge of their wellness.

As we move throughout our lives, there are instances in which we find ourselves experiencing feelings that can be hard to describe, let alone understand. Mood changes, life transitions, trauma, loss and self esteem issues are just a few of the elements we encounter in our quest to have a fulfilling life. Learning how to optimistically cope with or eliminate these feelings altogether is a daunting task but with the right effort and determination, the goal is attainable.

Cotton can help child, adolescent and adult clients heal from past trauma wounds and disruptive life circumstances by providing quality psychotherapy, promoting the wellness and peace we so desire in our own lives and the lives of those we love.
Life is stressful. It becomes even more so when trying to cope with a history of childhood mistreatment or abuse, failed relationships, parenting stresses, anxiety or disrupted mood. Struggling with these issues can also make us feel isolated and alone. Reaching out for help can be the most courageous and healthiest thing we do. Don’t continue to struggle with these issues alone.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
