You're ready to start feeling better and are interested in a holistic approach embracing: forgiveness, self esteem, trauma, anxiety, depression, co-dependency, loneliness and learning to tap into your inner resilience.
No matter how hard you try to move forward, you feel like your taking one step back. You’re a high performer with perfectionism tendencies and always put on a smile, which helps you forget your pain. You may feel you will never be fully happy and never be able to fully enjoy life how others do, because of your many losses, attributing to your decreased self esteem. You may keep friends and family at a distance, to protect yourself from yet another inevitable loss. You may have stopped exercising and taking care of yourself the way you used to, since it takes too much work and you're just surviving at the end of another long day.

Everyone deserves to have a good day and a better tomorrow. I realize that taking on a personal change out of desire or necessity is often harder than it sounds. I start where you are and work with you to create a path to a place of well-being.

Areas of emphasis: family of origin issues; attachment or intergenerational trauma; narcissistic abuse; race and/or gender related stress/trauma; perfectionism, high levels of self-criticism and shame.
Life is hard! Pause for a moment and give yourself credit for taking this brave, difficult step. You're respecting your struggles AND looking for constructive ways to address them. I use a collaborative and exploratory (rather than expert) model to help you develop/access resources to navigate life's difficulties. I use approaches supported by research while recognizing the limits of evidence-based therapies which often need to be adapted, abandoned, or incorporated with other practices to meet a person's realities, needs, and strengths. I strive to create a safe supportive relationship and deeply value feedback and dialogue.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for understanding thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and EMDR to bring relief and healing from trauma are two helpful tools (among others) that can help restore your quality of life.
What would your life be like if your anxiety, depression, grief, or overwhelming emotions improved by even just a little? What if you no longer had to navigate life’s difficulties alone? Would it feel like growth?... Strength?... Confidence? … Relief? Rather than your emotions taking over you, let's work together as you learn to gain more control over them, instead.

Do you experience negative thoughts about yourself, frequent worries about the future, or maybe even become so numb that you feel nothing at all? I believe that everyone has some sort of trauma from their past that continues to affect their well-being and relationships with others. I will be curious about what you are showing up to therapy with; because I believe that our symptoms tell a story. They tell us what helped us to survive in a sometimes harsh and unjust world, but maybe no longer serve us. In order words, the things we do that once protected us, are usually the same things that hold us back today.

Whether you're looking to process trauma, befriend your ADHD, or reduce the shame you hold around parenting, I am here to support you with integrative and evidence-based practices that are specially tailored to your unique goals, interests, and ways of being in the world.
No matter how hard you try, you can’t show up in your life the way you imagine and intend to. You fantasize about your ideal life, but unhealthy patterns keep you from showing up for yourself and those you care about in ways that don’t align with your values. It’s difficult for you to be present, which causes disruption in all areas of your life and increases your anxiety. You feel ashamed of your reaction to stress, which makes you feel lonely and disconnected. You know you need to prioritize yourself and set boundaries, but you’re fearful that this might cause another disruption, which is just too overwhelming.

In session, I hold a humanistic and trauma-informed stance, acknowledging the profound role of adverse experiences, including childhood trauma, racism and discrimination, and a lack of access to resources.
People often seek the support of a therapist when they are looking to make a change in their lives. They may have tried and succeeded, only to find themselves at what feels like square one days later. This cycle can be exhausting and may lead to burn out and feelings of shame. In response to this shame, symptoms such as perfectionism, procrastination, or anxiety attacks may arise. I am passionate about defusing shame in my clients’ lives and creating space for healing through acknowledging that all behaviors make sense in the context of our lives and utilizing a values-based approach to effecting change.

My clinical and work experience include working in a hospital psychiatric unit with all dynamics of mental health issues, including suicidal ideation, depression, schizophrenia, substance abuse, bipolar, borderline, psychosis, domestic violence, sexual abuse, PTSD and TBI's.
I believe in a non-judgmental, person-centered, positive approach in the counseling relationship, where the client feels comfortable enough to express their feelings and thoughts while examining factors which may be causing them pain, anxiety, or unhappiness. I also believe that individuals have the power within themselves to overcome these personal barriers to attain their full potential. My goal is to support you and give you tools to use along the way, and also in your future. There is light at the end of what may seem a dark tunnel, but together we will work to get you there.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
