Dr. Tonya Griffith specializes in a Trauma-informed approach to treating children, adults, and families with the understanding that trauma occurs when dangerous traumatic events overwhelm a person's ability to cope. Some examples include abuse or neglect, violence, witnessing or experiencing sexual abuse, serious accidents, illness, or the loss of a loved one. Traumatic experiences have been linked to poor health outcomes and reduced quality of life. A trauma-informed approach is used when appropriate, to help individuals and families overcome the negative effects of trauma experienced in their lives.

In addition, I’ve earned a certification in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Sometimes we need to understand what brought us to this point in life. Many individuals experience symptoms associated with painful and traumatic circumstance, others experience fear and hopelessness. Whether it's feeling overwhelmed by anxiety or depression, or feeling stuck and defeated because you haven't reached a life goal -- having someone to help guide you through those issues may be what you need. Therapy is an opportunity to talk with someone trained to listen in a confidential, safe space by providing a non-judgmental and supportive environment to help you heal and grow.

My career has focused on helping people heal from addiction and trauma.
Mental Illness and Addiction robs us of our hopes and dreams. It touches all areas of our life, harming ourselves, our parents, partners, and children. At times life feels hopeless. Even the idea of change seems unattainable. To treat mental illness and addiction or substance use disorders you address a host of emotions, trauma, depression, anxiety, relationship conflict, life issues, and existential struggles. I have spent the last 17 years of my career helping individuals, couples, and families heal from mental illness and substance use disorders and making this moment a leaping off event to their next journey.

Through a trauma informed combination of mindful based practices, dialectical and somatic therapies, we can uncover how your personal experience has shaped the way you make meaning in order to provide relief and initiate change.
My aim and joy as a therapist is to understand you as an expert on your own life. In order to process the complexity of everyday living, we compartmentalize and make generalizations about our experience. Sometimes we hold on to generalizations that may have served us at one point, but no longer apply to current circumstances. I concentrate on listening, non-judgmental questioning, emotional support and holding space for your process. My collaborative approach focuses on adaptation, allowing us to apply the methods that work best, while processing and making space for what does not work.

A life that is trauma, or drama-free is often based in fairy tales. Let's face it happily ever after does not provide details of "who", "what" and "how" happy is defined. Healthy coping skills are necessary tools to help people master life's issues and maintain their health mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
