My work focuses on adults, especially men (28 yo+), who seek healing, growth and a better relationship with this stage of their life. They want more than mere symptom relief and book recommendations. They are tired of the fears and disconnection and unhelpful core beliefs. They want to love and connect more easily. They want a path forward. Our work together encourages action, engagement, creativity, and it aims to revive the joy of learning something new and useful. (website: www.chuckgenre.com)

I am an experienced family therapist who has worked with children, adolescents, adults, and families in a variety of settings. I see self-pay clients and Blue Cross Blue Shield. I am often the first person to see a young child when emotional and behavioral difficulties emerge in pre-school or Kindergarten. I can help figure out what's going on diagnostically and we can develop a treatment plan together. I have successfully helped children and adults with ADHD, PTSD, Anxiety, and Mood Disorders like Depression and Bipolar Disorder.

These issues include depression, anxiety, trauma, family problems, relationships, self-harm, sexuality and gender.
Are you, your teen or young adult child struggling? Withdrawing? Anxious? Making dangerous choices? Having trouble getting along? For over twenty years I have been helping people work through their situations to think more clearly, make better choices, and ultimately, to feel better about themselves. Because trust and good communication between the therapist and the client is so important, I invite you to email or call me and talk about what you are looking for and my approach to see if this might be a good fit for you or your child.

We can heal trauma.
Do you ever feel that no matter how hard you try, you just "fail" every time? Do you look at yourself in the mirror with disgust and wonder why you feel so alone? Life is hard without all the challenges that meets us along the way. I am here to walk your journey with you. You are not alone. Together we can meet life's challenges; whether it is a loss of a loved one, nightmares that come from a traumatic event, feelings of loneliness and unworthiness, anxiety, relationship problems, suicidal thoughts and self harming behaviors, brokenness, chronic pain and illness, death and dying. You do not need to journey alone.

Trauma, adjustment, grief, loss, depression, anxiety, and substance use concerns are some of my specialties.
I realize searching for a therapist can be a daunting process; whether you know the specific issue you want to work on or you’re simply unsure, but you just “know” (or have been told) you could use a skilled therapist. I bring to this work my experience, my knowledge, my empathy and humor. I will ask you to walk this journey with me as we explore the paths to growth.

My areas of specialty are individuals with trauma, PTSD, grief, loss, anxiety, depression and working with first responders, uniformed service members and their families.
We all deserve to live a life that brings us happiness and joy. There are bumps in the road and sometimes we need help navigating the terrain. I have dedicated my life to supporting people and their journeys. Our lives are made up of “right nows”, we cannot change our past, nor predict our future, what we can do is stay in the moment and embrace what comes next.

I have expertise in treating and evaluating trauma, issues related to foster care and adoption, depression and anxiety, behavioral challenges, grief and loss, learning differences, and ADHD.
**Practice full as of Nov 2019** I am a licensed psychologist specializing in therapy with children and adolescents. I believe we all develop "ways of being" in the world as a result of our innate temperament and early experiences. Psychotherapy and psychological testing offer the chance to look at these ways of being with a compassionate lens, honoring the value they have held in your life while determining whether they are still useful to you now. Through this process, new ways of being can emerge, leading to greater satisfaction in your life.

I warmly welcome the opportunity to work with young adults and adults who are struggling with life transitions, anxiety, trauma, depression, shame, mood issues, grief/loss, identity, self esteem, and relationship issues.
So much of life--its changes, its challenges, its day-to-day stressors--can feel overwhelming at times. This overwhelm can create feelings of stuckness, aloneness, or hopelessness that inhibit us from living the lives we wish to live. The wonderful news is these are not permanent conditions. I believe deeply in the healing potential of therapy to free us from emotional overwhelm, reconnect us with our inherent power and inner peace, and grow us in profoundly energizing ways.

I help my clients by providing trauma informed, evidence-based practice through interconnected approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy, strength-based, self-compassion focused, and mindfulness modalities.
I believe therapy is most effective when people feel safe, comfortable and at ease in a non-judgmental, neutral environment. My hope is to help people feel seen, heard, and to feel empowered by offering a warm, compassionate and supportive space to my clients. It is here that people can safely process everyday stressors, difficult experiences past or present, symptoms of anxiety that may be showing up in their life, symptoms of depression, codependency, relationship and or family conflict, or struggling with changes happening around them. You do not need to do any of this alone and I am so glad you are here.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
