My belief is that a safe therapeutic alliance is the facilitator of change and growth. There are many struggles that might impact a person’s reasoning for seeking therapy. I provide a supportive environment, focused on providing empathy and non-judgment. I utilize our relationship as the base for self-empowerment, modeling, and growth. Throughout therapy, I encourage self-reflection and asking questions about one’s treatment. I want to promote one’s self-advocacy, emotional intelligence, and understanding of self.

Since I work a lot with trauma and other heavy topics, I focus on ways to approach these areas in a comforting and empathetic way.
Not all clients arrive to therapy with the same issues or the same rooting point, so therapy needs to be unique to each individual. I provide a space to establish how clients see therapy happening and I am there to help guide the process in a healthy manner. The space belongs to the client, not me.

I find great meaning in working with clients who are struggling with past trauma, mood disorders, and anxiety. I enjoy working with people of all ages and from all different backgrounds. I believe the professional relationship between therapist and client should be collaborative, strengths-based, and genuine. I like to utilize different types of interventions, such as Guided Imagery, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, solution-focused therapy, meditation, and mindfulness. I am always working on learning new modalities and activities to develop my therapeutic skills.

I am a retired veteran whose passion for helping people developed during my time in the military from working with Active-Duty Service Members and their families through the struggles that they faced on a regular basis. I work with individuals and couples dealing with trauma, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and adjustment concerns to name a few. Regardless of how overwhelmed you may be feeling, there are people available who can help you to be able to manage and function during those times (even in those moments where we feel that it is not possible).

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health! Life can be stressful, unpredictable, chaotic, frustrating, and constantly throwing us curve balls. Sometimes we just need help processing our thoughts and feelings or making important life decisions. Other times, we may be struggling with mental illness, substance use, grief and loss, relationship and family issues, trauma and abuse, identity issues or other serious problems that are keeping us from living a happy and productive life. During these times, reaching out for help may feel scary or embarrassing.

Transitions and trauma can create feelings of depression, anxiety, anger, resentment, guilt, shame, worthlessness, & countless others.
Motherhood is beautiful; but from pregnancy to parenting, it’s not easy. Maybe you're holding your baby, wondering why you don’t feel “happy” yet. You’re afraid of not being "good enough" and you feel overwhelmed as you try to survive without sleep. Your expectations around labor and birth did not go to plan and you feel a loss that others don’t understand. Maybe you're pregnant now; filled with hormones, fear, and anxiety about the transition ahead. You want to prepare but don’t know where to start. Maybe you’re struggling to get pregnant, questioning and measuring everything, angry and afraid of hearing the word "infertility".

Research has shown Mindfulness practices to be more effective than medication in the treatment of PTSD, depression, and anxiety.
I work with clients of all ages. With younger populations I specialize in childhood anxiety, depression, neglect/abuse, children of divorce, foster care, anger management, and aggressive behaviors. With adults I use client centered and solution focused approaches to address symptoms related to anxiety, depression, and adverse experiences including trauma. I am trained in TF-CBT (trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy) and EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) and utilize those therapies with both children and adults. I look for behavioral and wholistic ways to improve functioning before suggesting medicinal interventions.

Congratulations on taking the FIRST courageous step toward dealing with your PAIN that is no longer working for you; or perhaps you like to grow and learn more about yourself; or you want to achieve HEALING from grief/loss related to major life changes. Painful symptoms related to trauma, abuse, anxiety, depression, or relational issues are tough to tackle by yourself. By giving a non-judgmental and an empathetic therapist a CHANCE and Therapy time, change IS possible. I am dually licensed in Kansas and Missouri.

I love supporting couples and individuals who are wanting to make a change in their life or wanting to feel better. Maybe they are struggling with regulating their emotions and don't have enough tools to be as resilient as they would like to be. Maybe there are outside stressors with work, a relationship, or kids and want support in how to handle a situation. They may find themselves "triggered" by things from past trauma and they don't know how to cope. They may feel very stuck in a relationship and now sure how to move forward.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
