You may have suffered greatly internally and contemplated making a change. When the time comes, the risk to remain tight in a bud can be more painful than the risk it takes to blossom. If you are ready to improve your self-esteem, or seek healing from trauma, or overcome a depressive episode, or rebuild healthy relationships, I am here to guide and walk with you in your journal of growth and transformation. As a clinical and research psychologist and former assistant professor, I actively incorporate 14 years of clinical experience and research evidence working with children, adolescents, adults, and couples in my work with clients.

How We Treat One Another Matters: For better and for worse, across our whole lives, we operate in relationships. Our views of our "self" and how we relate to others develop from how we have been treated in relationships. Our capacities to love, to learn, to become our best, all emerge optimally within healthy relationships. Likewise, wounds of heart and soul emerge from ways we have been treated and/or choices we have made which have hurt us, sometimes very deeply. Persons who have experienced relational trauma and/or overwhelming life stressors are ideal candidates for clinical services at Gateway.

I have experience working with individuals who experience anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and trauma.
Welcome! The decision to begin therapy is a difficult but commendable process. Often times, there is a lot of fear and anxiety linked with this journey. It takes courage to sit in the client seat. My goal is to create a strong therapeutic relationship with my clients. People come from all walks of life and, sometimes, all we need is a listening ear to validate what we are experiencing. Whether it is your first time seeking counseling or you are resuming again after a break, pat yourself on the back for your effort!

Often times we look back on our past with disdain and dwell on “what ifs” and fall into second-guessing ourselves. In my work with you, we will focus on how you can accept and make peace with your past, while also learning from past situations. I believe that everyone has a story to tell and can learn to embrace their past as a stepping stone for a brighter tomorrow. My goal is to create an open and safe environment where you can: raise your concerns, fears and needs; become more accepting of yourself; clarify your goals; and determine how you can work to achieve your goals and resolve current challenges.

My ideal client is someone who is willing to be helped, someone who is accepting of change, and someone who is open to ideas/conversations and is looking to be heard. The issues my ideal client presents with are varied and can include anxiety, depression, self-esteem, stress, or relationships. As for their goals, the goal would be to become a better human being that is balanced and at peace with those around them - to become a better friend, a better partner, or a better person for their family. My ideal client wants to become the best version of themselves, or they want to learn how to love and accept themselves as they are.

Therapy can be intimidating to many people. I don't believe in having a "diagnosis" in order to justify therapy... there are benefits to even the most mentally strong. Much like cars need a tune up, people need to often make mental health a priority! Whether it be a major life change, difficulty in relationships, or feeling like something is missing...

Drawing from evidence-based modalities such as trauma-informed cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), humanistic therapy and Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT), I work collaboratively with clients to address the unique challenges they face, heal from their past experiences, help end cycles of trauma and cultivate a sense of resilience in their lives.
Hi! My name is Sandy and I am Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) providing counseling to teenagers (12+) and adults in Illinois. My past clinical experience includes working with adolescents and adults, and veterans, especially those with past trauma and/or those who struggle with anxiety and depression. I also am passionate about working with immigrants, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ community members and multicultural populations. I especially believe in providing support for these populations as they are often systematically underserved and overlooked in behavioral health and healthcare.

I utilize client-centered strength-based approaches toward trauma-informed treatment and believe in the power of love, compassion, and appreciation.
We live in a world of information explosion. You could google everything online and learn something about it. Meanwhile, I believe there is a reason that you are seeking therapy. My role as a therapist is to meet you where you are—maybe you sense something is going on in your life and you have an idea about what to do next, maybe you are curious about some patterns in your life and you would like to explore them, maybe you are struggling and you just want to try anything to feel better… I would work collaboratively with you toward where you want to go. I hope to be your ally, standing firmly with you and prioritizing your benefits.

It would be ideal for us to be motivated to improve our lives when things are going well. More often than not, we only make changes to our lives during times of darkness. In our work together, we can focus on finding the beauty, joy, and peace in your life. We can step into the darkness together with curiosity.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
