I work with people from every community and stage of life, including LGBTQ+ people, couples, families, and people suffering from addiction, trauma, spiritual issues, grief and loss, and mood disorders.
Some stories are just too hard for us to tell on our own and some will cause us pain just because we are still stuck in the middle of it. Stories can cause us to feel anxiety, stress, depression, confusion, and anger. They can even cause us to do things that we know are not helpful, even harmful, to cope with the negative feelings. I have a passion for people's stories and walking with people through the painful but enriching process of getting unstuck. Wherever you find yourself, you are welcome to come exactly as you are.

I offer a range of treatment options centered around discovering exactly what isn't working, learning to understand myself and those around me, and moving through the trauma, anxiety, and depression to a place where the past stays in the past, and I have a sense of meaning and confidence in my ability to face today and the future.
For many people, the daily experience of anxiety and depression can feel like "just the way things are." Sometimes, we've lived for so long with it, we don't remember what it's like to live without it. The stress caused by depression and anxiety can affect nearly every part of our lives, including our physical health, our relationships, our careers. Traumatic events or recurring "micro traumas" like bullying or emotional abuse can feel overwhelming. Things can feel even worse if we've been to doctors and therapists before, and nothing seems to have worked.

As a therapist and trauma specialist, part of what I do is help individuals and couples create a safe space to slow down what is happening inside or between them, name it properly, and break things down into manageable bites.
We all want to create lives that are joyful, deeply satisfying, and connected to others. Yet no one goes through this world unscathed by the difficult people, circumstances, and experiences we all encounter along the way. To survive, we generally organize our lives around 2 things – how we manage our pain and how we manage our relationships. And sometimes those survival strategies, intended at one point to protect us, end up keeping us from the very things we long for. Or we feel stuck or overwhelmed by events, and are not sure how to navigate our inner, emotional, or relational worlds alone.

I draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches because therapy isn't one size fits all. This may involve changing your thoughts and behaviors (CBT), learning how to be more present (mindfulness), and/or establishing safety (trauma-informed).

I work from a trauma-informed perspective incorporating movement and creativity into our sessions.
Whether you’re going through a tough time or thriving in your career, you don’t have to face it alone. In your sessions I listen and provide support in a safe space where your feelings matter. You don’t have to be the “strong one” here. There’s space for you to let your guard down and not keep it together for everyone else.

I offer trauma-informed, client centered therapy for adults of all ages.
Have you found yourself feeling stuck or discouraged lately? Some of the struggles I hear about include self-doubt, boundaries, and stressful life changes. Others are dealing with toxic relationships, family, or work environments. People usually come to therapy because they're experiencing pain in one form or another. I've worked with clients of all ages and with a variety of issues, but the thing most of them have in common is that they all need someone in their lives to remind them that they matter. Everyone needs a sounding board, a place they can process without fear of judgment. I would love to provide that space for you.

I am L. Elizabeth Shelton, GA LPC 008242 and have been fully licensed since 2012, originally in Virginia and since 2015 in Georgia. My theoretical orientation to therapy is CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) as I believe it is critical to understand how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors interact and drive most of the problems people struggle to overcome. I have experience working with a wide range of areas/conditions, though most often focus on helping individuals with depression, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, and trauma.

Maybe, on paper, you’re successful, well-accomplished, and admired, but others don’t see that you are often overwhelmed with imposter syndrome and a general feeling of not being good enough. It could be that you desire healthy relationships, but can’t quite figure out what’s blocking you from having the emotional intimacy that you desire. Perhaps you recognize patterns of trauma in your family and you’re ready to interrupt the patterns. Or, your life may not be in complete crisis, but you want to be sure that you are addressing areas that may be preventing you from living your life to the fullest.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
