I am a "generalist" but my specialties include loss (trauma, grief, untimely death including loss of children, terminal illness, grief), developmental trauma, life transitions, as well as anxiety and depression.
Few slots open: If you are feeling uneasy and fearful, if you are constantly worrying, feeling "lost" or "directionless", you are not alone. Its hard to ask for help but you have come this far. Take the next step and reach out.

I specialize in the treatment of trauma, depression, anxiety, ADHD and relational issues.
Taking the step to start psychotherapy can be challenging. If you are considering beginning this difficult, yet rewarding journey, and find yourself hesitating, please know that this is normal. In therapy, I will encourage you to share only what you are ready to share and we will begin with that. Every session, we will actively work on your concerns and difficulties, while building a safe space. Right now, you may be feeling overwhelmed and anxious, depressed, stuck, or you may feel hijacked by past trauma, yet healing is possible. Just like everyone else, you have the right to live your life fully and to embody your inner wisdom.

I work with patients who come for help with relationship problems, symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as those with interpersonal trauma from relationships with family or partners.
A person's trajectory in life can be offset by stress, strain and compromises. Therapy can re-orient a person to their core needs and strivings, allowing them to become more effective and engaged at work, home, and in relationships. Imagining positive change for yourself is an important step and yet taking that step can be challenging. "The best time to plant a tree was yesterday; The second best time is now." I look forward to hearing about what's happening in your life now.

I am Certified in EMDR. EMDR is a trauma therapy which research has shown to be highly effective. The most important characteristics of a good therapist are intelligent listening, the ability to use multiple skills according to the needs of the client, and most importantly, compassion. I have worked with depression and anxiety (among other issues) for 31 years. It is very difficult to seek help at a time when one is most vulnerable and I am especially sensitive to this with my clients.

I provide psychodynamic, trauma-informed, and relational psychotherapy.
Therapy is not about fixing you as if you're broken. To me, it's about recovering from suffering, and connecting deeply and authentically to your thoughts, feelings, desires and dreams. It can be difficult to begin a new therapy relationship and be vulnerable, especially when relationships have been harmful in the past. I think taking the risk anyway reflects an inherent pull toward repairing the old wounds that restrict our capacity to live freely and joyfully. I love working with LGBTQIA folks, relationships, trauma, and difficulties with shame, self-love and acceptance.

I specialize in working with individuals who have experienced acute trauma, abuse, and neglect, and I utilize trauma-centered psychotherapy and drama therapy to help expose and desensitize my clients to their past harm.
Imagine going to the doctor with a knife sticking out of your arm and being asked about your medical history. You would be pretty irritated that the obvious issue wasn't being tended to! Sure, removing the knife might cause some extra bleeding, and although there will always be a scar, the wound can begin to heal. Mental health difficulties might not be as obvious, but they require immediate and detailed attention. Are you ready to take dramatic action and prioritize yourself?

Integrative, collaborative approach, including: EMDR, experiential, "parts" work, inner child, trauma, women's issues, visualization, shame/guilt, spirituality, end-of-life, CBT, stress, mood/anxiety/dissociative disorders, relationship/attachment, LGBTQ, ACOA, loss/grief, life transitions; supervision.
All of us deserve to savor what life has to offer to the fullest extent possible. Many of us experience that journey as compromised by obstacles that threaten to rob us of our joy. These blockages may come from events in the present, such as loss of a loved one or a deteriorating relationship; or they may result from earlier events that have left wounds/scars unhealed. I have been engaged in clinical work for 41 years, helping people navigate difficulties, heal trauma, restore their lives to wholeness. I invite you to let me walk that journey with you.... -- Barbara

By seeking therapy you are taking an important step toward achieving a greater sense of fulfillment in life. You may currently be experiencing painful feelings, longstanding problems, or feeling stuck in repetitive patterns. Therapy can provide an opportunity to better understand the problems that occur in your life. Developing insight into yourself can lead to lasting change, such as more satisfying relationships, a more gratifying experience at work, recovery from trauma, and an alleviation of symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Your story is your own. My job as a therapist is to create a space of understanding and acceptance where your story can be told, and personal examination and growth can feel safe and attainable. I believe that as an individual's understanding of their own thoughts and emotions increases so, too, does their ability to resolve conflict, heal from trauma, repair relationships, communicate effectively, and break self-destructive patterns. My collaborative role in this process is to provide active listening, empathetic reflection and observation, and attuned interventions specific to your unique needs and strengths.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
