The majority of my background and training has been working with children, adolescents and adults who have experienced significant trauma in their lives.
My name is Erin Thomas and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Northern Colorado. In therapy, every client is different and has differing needs for the healing process to occur. This is why the most important step to me in working with a client is establishing a trusting relationship at the beginning of therapy so that I can understand how to help in the most effective way. Connecting with others in a way that supports them through difficult times in their lives has been my passion and I continue to look for new ways to help those who struggle.

Life is not easy with all it demands, expectations and responsibilities. At some point in life and under certain circumstances life can become too difficult and we feel overwhelmed. We react with stress, anxiety, depression and trauma. This is the time when we are ready to look for support and to find ways improving our lives. Be it from a difficult childhood, the end of a relationship or from other hardships there are ways to heal. When you are ready to start the journey of healing I would be honored to accompany and help you to find your innate strength to build the healthy relationship with yourself and the life you deserve.

I have specialized in trauma throughout my career.
I love helping people to overcome loss, remove barriers, learn more about themselves, and live fuller lives. You might be going through a painful loss or a major transition. You may have recently experienced a terrible trauma, or you have decided to finally address long-standing painful childhood experiences. You may be trying to decide if you can fix your relationship, or if it's time to leave. There are any number of reasons why people seek the help of a mental health professional. But it is often one of the most important journeys a person can undertake.

I am trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy and EMDR to assist you in fully healing and releasing complex trauma and single event trauma experiences.
You are unlike any other being that exists. You are a creative force. You go against the grain and it might feel like you don't fit in. Society has tried to box you in for so long that you've pushed away and hidden little parts of your soul. You may have numbed your feelings and ignored your heart's desires as a trade for comfort, stability, acceptance, and normalcy. I understand, because I've been there too, but this is what I know for sure. Our soul is crying out for true freedom. I will hold a safe space for you as we move towards healing what is blocking you from living your most powerful, abundant, and limitless life.

My specialization is supporting people healing from and growing after trauma.
Hello! I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) working in the Arvada area. I have been providing individual therapy for children, adolescents, and adults for over 8 years. In honoring that each persons process of healing is sacred and special, my approach is highly tailor, accepting, and holistic. I believe that vulnerability and connection are at the core of healing, but understand these things can be challenging. I strive to create a warm and safe environment in order to support positive change, empowerment, and sense of connectedness.

I work with clients navigating relational healing after trauma by identifying patterns that once supported the safety and may now be interfering with building new connections.
Change is always happening, the ebb and flow of mind, body, and spirit. So much energy spent trying to control and anticipate change so we can live our idealized lives. We bind ourselves up in the imposed binaries of good-bad, right-wrong, missing the spectrum of experiences that truly exist. All these steps to be somewhere we are not in our journey, to force movement towards "better" experience. Exhausting. What if instead of fighting for control, we could find a way to be okay where we are and foster responsive movement in our life, where we follow its flow? I aim to support clients in befriending and moving with their patterns.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
