Relationships can be hard. Partners struggle with communication, conflicting parenting styles, sexual expressions... Life's challenges, hurtful fights, history of trauma or infidelity make it difficult to sustain trust and closeness. How can you create desired connections, and not lose yourself in the process? How can you be true both to self and to your partnership? I invite you to explore these questions together with empathy and curiosity, letting go of habitual judgments, self-deprecation, and shame. I work with individuals, couples, and families. Both traditional and alternative lifestyles are welcome, and no issue is a taboo.

Since 1998, I've used EMDR to treat performance anxiety, self-esteem, relationship issues, eating disorders, and trauma due to divorce, surgeries, accidents, job loss, grief, and abuse.
For years, I have served as a supportive psychologist, teacher, and artist. I specialize in trauma and developed a Recovery Model to heal emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. The Model also addresses healthier adult sexuality and intimacy. In 1998, the APA gave me an honorary award for my research. My art work is featured in: Transformation of the Psyche: by Drs. Joseph Henderson and Dyane Sherwood. I provide in-depth adult psychotherapy using creative, cognitive, and transpersonal methods. I encourage patient healing through visualization, body/mind/spiritual connection, transpersonal psychology, and dream work.

I work with individuals with trauma, anxiety, & depression using EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and other modalities tailoring my approach to the unique needs of my client.
Many of my clients feel stuck in old patterns of behaviors and communication styles that no longer serve them. As a result, they often feel misunderstood and disconnected from one another. With my years of training and compassionate attunement, I have helped them move out of old negative cycles, gain a deeper trust and connection with one another and have peace and harmony in their relationship. Please visit my website at www.jgriggiomft.com for a more information on how we can work together to help you achieve this too. I also help people with their struggles of anxiety, depression and PTSD. I teach methods for symptom relief.

I'm here to tell you the good news-that over the years, I have helped many feel relief from the anxiety and trauma to live a more present and fulfilling life.
Are you feeling overwhelmed by all the ways that you have no control over yourself and your future? Maybe you're replaying certain conversations and scenarios in your mind over and over again and feeling helpless wondering how to make your mind stop. You may have even noticed a pattern in your relationship with others and wondered, "Is there something WRONG with me?" And all of this thinking just fuels your doubts about yourself only to leave you feeling even more inadequate, powerless, damaged, different, and not good enough. Though a part of you KNOWS that you are good enough, you can't help but to FEEL as if you aren't.

You may be feeling like something is wrong but aren’t sure why. Perhaps others see you as successful but to you it feels like something is missing. Maybe you are shouldering the weight of anxiety, stress, or self-doubt that can often cause our worlds to shrink. I will meet you in that place and we will work together to dig our way out. I help people who are struggling with anxiety, healing from past trauma, grappling with dissatisfaction in career or relationships, and facing life transitions. I bring my authentic self to our sessions and care about creating a space where you feel safe and affirmed in your identity.

As an experienced clinical psychologist specializing in anxiety, trauma, PTSD, and anger, I’m here to help you with practical tools and in-depth work for lasting change, fostering calm, confidence, and clarity.
It’s tough to go through the day dealing with overwhelming feelings of anxiety, anger, sadness, shame, or haunting memories. You may struggle with harsh self-criticism and a fear of failing while trying to maintain a facade of accomplishment and success. It can be exhausting to always feel the pressure to be perfect and support everyone else while neglecting your own needs. It might feel easier to push through alone than to ask for help, as you worry about being judged or burdening others. You could turn to unhealthy coping for relief, which leads to more stress. There is a way out, and I want to help you get your life back.

My particular expertise and interest is in working with survivors of trauma, abuse and victimization. Having survived trauma, abuse and victimization can lead to a variety of outcomes. Some people survive trauma with no problems at all, while other people develop anxiety, depression, substance use, personality or relationship issues. Various traumatic events, such as parental divorce or substance abuse, are very common even in middle class populations and have often both physical and psychological effects many years after the experienced trauma.

My special interests include: marriage & premarital counseling, relationship issues, parenting dilemmas, cultural/ immigration concerns as well as ADHD, depression, anxiety, trauma and addiction.
As a seasoned licensed psychologist focusing on relationship issues, I work online with couples, individuals and families of adult children who want to improve their intimate relationships at home as well as their relational skills at work. I believe therapy is most effective when it provides both a safe space for reflection as well as a challenge. Additionally, I think good therapy calls for collaboration, sensitivity, honesty, and most of all having your best interests at heart.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
