When I begin a session with a new client, I want to present myself as a real person. I want to create a situation where the client feels comfortable being him/herself and communicating whatever is going on. I will observe closely, being as present as possible. I will listen carefully and respond when appropriate. I may ask questions or make interpretations about what we talk about, but most importantly I want the client to feel free to say whatever is on his/her mind. I want to establish a trusting relationship so we can begin to work on this person’s issues.

I have over 20 years of experience empowering clients, teaching them coping skills, identifying distorted thinking, and triggers, and equipping them with tools and techniques that can be useful when they need to rescue themselves, helping them connect with their inner strength and see the diamond that they are. My approach is calm, empathetic, compassionate, client-led, trauma-informed, and Strengths-Based. I like prescribing movements such as yoga, movie therapy, and bibliotherapy as adjunct to therapy.

You wake up and already know it’s going to be a bad day. Last night you fell asleep with a knot in your stomach and a lump in your throat. Things haven’t been okay for a long time, but now all the words left unsaid are taking a toll on your body. You wish you could share what you feel and need without it causing a fight with your partner. Every little thing has become a point of tension and a reason to fight. After the arguments, the silence is loud and you feel vulnerable, unsure, and scared. Anxiety and insecurities creep in and you question whether this relationship is the right choice.

Me especializo no tratamento de ansiedade, depressão e trauma.

People come to see me for a wide variety of reasons, but almost always, they feel stuck in some way—whether from difficult or volatile relationships, overwhelming thoughts and emotions, addictions, or the effects of trauma. I work with adults of all ages, kids, and couples, to figure out what’s keeping them stuck and unhappy, and to help them in getting freed up to live life in new ways. As a psychoanalytic therapist, I can help you cultivate a more integrated and accepting awareness of the different parts of your life, yourself, and your present experience. Our work together would be unique, based on you as an individual.

You may be an artist. You may be an academic. You may be an activist. I have been all three of these, and I speak their languages: of creativity, intellectual enlivenment, and social justice. And right now, in this time of upheaval and unrest, you may be hurting--feeling lost, adrift, burned out, under- or over-stimulated, or simply sad. I am here to connect with you. To listen compassionately. To make space for you to better hear yourself, and to encourage linkages, mentalizations, and trauma metabolizations that will allow you to better listen to the rhythms of your body and use your own mind. I offer you my mind in this pursuit.

We often find ourselves considering psychotherapy when the things we are doing doesn't seem to be working. Maybe you have read the books, listened to the podcasts, watched youtube videos, and yet something just keeps getting in the way. Or maybe things are just feeling stuck. Whether you are struggling with self-worth, an eating disorder, complex trauma, or you want to deepen your understanding of yourself and create more meaningful relationships, therapy can help.

I specialize in the treatment of acute and chronic anxiety, panic, and post-traumatic stress.
Stress and anxiety can drain emotional and physical energy, making even the smallest life obstacles seem impossible to overcome. When we are anxious or stressed, we have trouble sleeping, feel exhausted from worrying, and have difficulty concentrating and making decisions. Anxiety and stress can also make people socially avoidant, risk aversive, or hypervigilant, as if something catastrophic is just about to happen. If you are often worried, tense, or keyed up, or have frequent panic attacks, know that anxiety can be treated successfully.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
