I also do EMDR for trauma resolution involving life threatening situations, sexual and physical abuse, anxiety and depression.
I am a psychotherapist who has been in private practice for 30 years. Because of the longevity of my work, I have encountered a wide variety of people of all ages and problems. I believe in the dignity and value of each individual person and treat people with empathy, compassion, warmth, and kindness. I give sustained attention during a session and believe that people can solve their own problems with some objective structure and feedback. For my clients' convenience I maintain two offices. Weekend and evening appointments are available.

I've been in practice for 30 years and am co-founder/faculty member of the Houston-Galveston Trauma Institute whose mission is to train mental health professionals.
In this time of crisis and fear that the whole world is experiencing, I think that I must first address how any person who comes to me is coping, how she/he is managing safety and fears for her/himself and his/her family. We cannot dissociate what is happening to all of us now because that replicates what may have happened to many of us in some distant past traumatic experience: Not to talk about what happened. My clients often have struggled with similar problems for years, often working hard in therapy, but not fully understanding the link between their struggles and their experiences in the past.

Specialized training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) enables me to treat Trauma and PTSD.
During my own personal journey in seeking a therapist, I found it difficult to connect with a counselor in whom I felt safe to tell my most personal concerns. Finding the right help didn't come easy. So, after 25 years in the medical profession, I answered a heart felt calling to provide the counseling I had long searched for. Even with all of the wonderful theories I learned and now practice, the most important element in counseling is the trust relationship between the therapist and the client. My goal is to make your therapeutic experience a meaningful connection with someone who truly cares.

You can visualize your ideal self, yet anxiety, trauma, and negative habits are holding you back. I have been there and I understand the struggle, but your actions and thoughts are all behavior and they can be changed. With my unique approach as a behavior analyst and trauma-informed coach, we can collaboratively devise a tailored plan for meaningful change. While traditional talk therapy has its merits, I'm not a therapist—I am a behavioral scientist and coach. If you've hit a plateau in your self-help journey or feel stuck in your current behaviors, let's explore a more structured, action-based path to healing and growth.

I have experience in supporting individuals with a variety of mental health challenges including substance use, depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, and PTSD.
Life is full of ups and downs. A big transition, the death of a loved one, or a traumatic event can show up as anxiety, depression, addiction, or even physical pain. These feelings don’t have to linger. With evidence-based therapies, such as EMDR, I can help you overcome traumatic events or simply unhealthy (and often untrue) ways of thinking of yourself and emerge as the “new” you with the clarity, confidence, and joy needed to live the life you deserve.

Making changes in life can be difficult. Regaining your balance after the shock and impact of trauma, grief and loss can be overwhelming and feel as if nothing will get better. Relationships are important to you, yet sometimes bring on difficult feelings. Life after recovering from substance use can be challenging to navigate and can feel strange. You’ve taken the first step by reaching out. The good news is that you don't have to do it alone.

My primary areas of expertise are Health Psychology and Trauma.
My practice centers around providing clients with the skills that they need to thrive in the face of stressful situations. Prior to entering private practice, I worked as a clinical psychologist on the spinal cord injury unit at TIRR. These individuals would have never otherwise sought mental health care but were faced with one of the most stressful and challenging experiences of their lives. My role was to help these individuals to effectively cope with serious, adverse medical events and to live happy, fulfilling lives. Likewise, in my private practice, I strive to help clients successfully navigate complex situations.

My specialty areas include relational difficulties, anxiety, depression, trauma, personality disorders, and addictions.
Life can be difficult at times. For many of us, protecting ourselves from suffering can take the form of troubling symptoms such as difficulties in relationship, emotional distress, and self-defeating behaviors. These symptoms communicate something essential about your suffering, fears and desires. Through close and attentive listening, we will explore together thoughts and feelings that have been previously unknown but profoundly impact your life today. My approach focuses on helping clients move beyond feeling stuck, fostering greater freedom and flexibility in their lives, while becoming more themselves.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
