Hello! My name is Sam, and I am a therapist with Restorative Wellness. I tend to work with clients who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community, between the ages 16-45, and are working to recover from trauma, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and grief. I also enjoy working with clients who want to clarify their values, develop self compassion, and learn how to "take up more space" in their lives and relationships. It's very important to me that my practice feels inclusive of all types of people, so I 'd also like to introduce myself to you as a cisgender, gay man, who is half Korean and half Caucasian.

I specialize in grief, loss, trauma, & anxiety.
In the face of life's hardships, it's normal to feel frozen sometimes, unsure of where to even begin to heal. Big emotions like grief or anxiety flare up in the wake of loss, unexpected life events, or simply build up over time. We might find ourselves stuck in patterns or beliefs that are no longer serving us. It can be daunting to dig in at first, but you can find your equilibrium again. Together, we will work on strategies that help you contain pain and make space for joy. You can find a path through your stuck points and live a life more in line with your chosen values and goals.

I work with adults processing a variety of issues including trauma, grief, relationships, complicated life transitions, depression, anxiety, and more. We can tend to feel “stuck” during difficult periods of our lives, or even start to form negative beliefs about ourselves as a result of trauma. Thoughts such as “I’m not good enough”, “something is wrong with me”, or “I’m permanently damaged”, “I can’t trust myself or others” etc.

Each of us has an innate capacity for self-healing, and a safe relationship allows that ability to emerge. Trauma doesn’t have to be a big event; there are many ways that our systems can be overwhelmed, resulting in stuck emotions, unprocessed memories, and unhelpful self-concepts. Our natural responses to perceived threats, at one point, are wise and protective. However, when the survival response remains stuck in the body it can create behaviors and symptoms that are damaging. Our thoughts, feelings, bodies, and environments are intricately connected, cyclically creating and informing each other.

If you are someone who has witnessed or experienced domestic violence, then you understand how any lingering trauma from those experiences can slip into our lives in ways we wish it wouldn't. Anxiety, mood disorders, obsessive/compulsive habits, and self destructive behaviors might feel out of control, or too overwhelming at times. As a trauma informed clinician with a long history of working with women and children of domestic violence, I wholly understand how the impacts of trauma can have catastrophic ripple effects into our relationships with our loved ones, with our children, and absolutely with ourselves.

I understand how trauma can affect many stages of life.
I'm not sure I have an ideal client. I believe in meeting a person where they are and moving forward from there. I feel people often come to therapy to help find the best version of themselves. I enjoy helping others find solutions to their problems, helping them identify their strengths, and deciding how to improve their weaknesses.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
