Hi there! My name Anna Cardoso and I am here to help you on your journey. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Yoga & Meditation Teacher, Holistic Coach, and a Reiki Master. I truly believe we all have the power to heal ourselves and it is my mission to share with you alternative methods to help you on your path. I like to think of it as finding your way back home to yourself and I am here to help you remember how. I fell in love with yoga and energy work in search for healing for my chronic pain and past trauma. Healing comes from the inside out and we first have to begin with ourselves.

Sometimes, there is an empty place or challenges that won't let you go. Sometimes the negativity in your head is louder than your resilient voice. I work with clients facing many changes or challenges including educational, relationship issues, financial stress, parenting, care giving, trauma, chronic health issues, bereavement and recovery.

We live in a traumatic world and the effects of this trauma are a heavy burden on our backs. We carry many things with us in our lives. This stuff clutters our closets, makes it hard to walk around our basements and gets in the way of our progress. I help my clients use images, objects, and memories to call forth their stories. Then I support them in learning the skills to retell these stories in a healthier way and to let go of the burden of trauma.

Although trained across the mental health field, my areas of specialization and passion include addiction, trauma and identity formation and I use a blend of trauma-informed, strength-based, solution-focused, and holistic approaches.
I hear you. I see you. And I understand. Have you had times when you have sat in pain and confusion, felt stuck in repetitive, self-destructive patterns, felt fearful and overwhelmed and not been able to see a clear way out? Connection, insight and support help. The therapeutic alliance between a therapist and their client is a sacred space based on trust and connection and has the power to change a “survivor” into a “thriver.” I welcome the opportunity to work together to explore the thoughts, core beliefs, and behaviors that might be keeping you feeling trapped and treading water and existing rather than in living fully.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with 15 years of experience and expertise in working with people to alleviate: the impact of trauma, abuse and neglect; depression and anxiety; relationship and family problems; concerns related to immigration, refugee, and first generation experiences; and concerns related to sexual orientation and gender identity.
People often relate to emotions as obstacles. Research shows emotions can give us valuable information to help guide our actions and to make good decisions. To make use of emotions, we must learn how to identify them, to experience them without becoming too overwhelmed, and to transform emotions that are not useful. I believe this type of learning happens most effectively in the context of a trusting relationship, and that a good psychotherapy relationship can provide an excellent opportunity for this. I help people learn how to relate to their emotions in ways that can be life-enhancing, rather than frightening or overwhelming.

Life after sexual trauma can be disorienting, altering your self-perception, trust in others, and connection with your body. It can extend beyond memories, impacting every facet of life. Coping with intense emotions, rebuilding trust, feeling disconnected from your body, experiencing flashbacks, avoiding triggers, and battling shame are common challenges. You might feel isolated and struggle to maintain balance in daily life. Through holistic, integrative, and somatic therapy approaches, we can explore pathways to healing, focusing on reclaiming your life and fostering reconnection with your body.

Life is difficult at times. Creating change within oneself that is lasting and meaningful sometimes requires a little assistance. I provide evidence based psychotherapy to adolescents and adults that helps to restore the balance lost in everyday relationships. I specialize in grief and loss issues, resolving trauma, and navigating through life's transitions. Psychotherapy is always collaborative and client centered. Although life can be challenging at times, there are ways to renew purpose, reconnect, and re-establish a sense of trust. As such, my primary goal as an independent psychologist is to assist clients in achieving their very best life.

I have worked in community mental health for over 10 years and have experience with a myriad of stressors including (not limited to) life transitions, relational problems, trauma (complex trauma), depression/anxiety, and grief.
Do you feel you've been living just to get through the days? Or that your past experiences in life are holding you back from what you'd really like to be doing? I may be able to help. Coming to therapy can be one of the most difficult decisions one chooses to make. Whether it's your first time, fifth time, or transitioning from a long history with a previous therapist, change can be very hard. Feeling the right connection is an important building block of treatment success.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
