I welcome those experiencing gender dysphoria as well as those seeking WPATH letters of support for gender affirmation treatment.
The human condition is stressful for everyone right now. Healthcare providers, LGBTQ2SIA + and those with chronic pain/medical illness are feeling it more than ever. Depression, anxiety and trauma responses can be overlooked/minimized. What you are experiencing is real and you deserve the time, space and support to explore this. Are your thoughts, feelings and behaviors getting in the way of your relationships/work/goals/well-being? Are you taking better care of others than you are of yourself? Is it time to move beyond surviving and begin thriving? If so, perhaps it's time to reach out for a helping hand. All are welcome here.

My goal is to help you regain purpose, be more authentic, and enjoy life and your relationships again. I am trained in Brainspotting therapy which provides a brain-body processing option for difficult-to-change ongoing challenges that talk therapy has not been able to change. Brainspotting is useful for such things as difficult to treat trauma, anxiety, depression, or impulse control, as well as improving things such as performance anxiety, physical pain, and addiction. I also offer a LGBTQ and polyamorous safe counseling experience and provide informed relationship and family counseling for these communities.

I practice from several approaches, but something that makes me different is my training and ability to practice Anti-Racist Trauma-Informed Care when appropriate and indicated for consenting clients. Unequal access to resources and social prejudice and discrimination creates difference of opportunity that shape people and family’s ability to create sustainable predictability, which often leaders to intergenerational trauma and stress. This area of focus is often disregarded or uncomfortable to discuss, with therapy being little exception to that rule.

My work focuses on taking a collaborative approach with clients to identify external challenges, personal choices, and regain a sense of control and meaning in situations that can feel chaotic and overwhelming. This means being encouraged to identify personal strengths to find solutions instead of pathologizing difficulties. My approach often focuses on issues relating to social justice, intersecting oppressed identities, and navigating an authentic sense of identity development within a culture of privilege and oppression.

To reveal and work through one's difficulties can be scary, but fulfilling and enriching. Thus, I work to create a trusting, supportive environment free of judgement that allows for a safe space to dive into the depths of one's unique story and what brings them to treatment. Therapy can be a powerful process in which one can gain new insights, decrease distress and suffering, uncover strengths and limitations, and improve relationships both with one's self and others. I will treat you with compassion, empathy, encouragement, and honesty as we navigate the therapeutic process together.

My goal is to meet the client where they are at and work together towards identifying what their struggles are, what gets in the way of addressing them and building skills to grow from there. Using mindfulness to increase awareness and understanding of the connection between mind and body we learn to recognize how emotions and other factors impact mood, attitude, attention and relationships. I view people through a trauma informed lens to ensure that all aspects of their past and present are considered possible influencers and may need to be better understood. I like to say my hope as your therapist is "helping you help yourself".

I am accepting new clients. Often we seek counseling when we’re not feeling like ourselves. Many people can struggle with the gap between logical knowing, “I know I’m a good person” and emotional experience, “But I don’t feel like I am”. A primary focus of my approach is to close that gap and integrate outdated beliefs and patterns that no longer serve you. I work well with folks who have a foundational understanding of therapy or who have gotten stuck in the talk therapy circuit. I practice Internal Family Systems (IFS), AKA “Parts work”. This process creates more self-leadership, more self-compassion, and deepens clarity.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
