I work with adolescents and adults on a wide range of challenges from general counseling and adjustment issues (feeling "stuck") to more clinical issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma and sexual issues. I focus on LGBT clients, particularly in the area of transgender identity, but have a diverse client base overall. I have experience working with clients that have issues related to polyamory, the kink community, and navigating these issues within relationships. I also have interns and supervisees that can see sliding scale clients from various populations.

I also specialize in women's issues, anxiety, transgender concerns, OCD and phobias using ERP, CBT, and other modalities.
I specialize in EMDR therapy and have 25 years of experience working with adults of various ages who are experiencing grief & loss, depression, anxiety, difficult life transitions, stressful relationships, trauma and work-related issues. I strive to listen well without judgment and to tailor the therapy to my client's individual needs and goals. I realize how difficult it can be to seek therapy, and to focus and talk about the areas in your life which need attention and change, especially when you are hurting and feeling vulnerable. Of primary importance is the quality of the relationship and trust between us as we work together.

I work collaboratively with clients to establish treatment goals, contextualize current symptoms in relation to your social environment, identify and strengthen current resilience strategies and create opportunities for feedback throughout the process. A typical question I may ask is, “What have you tried so far and how is it working?”, or “Who in your community do you rely on for support and how might they describe the issue(s) you’re facing?”.

My goal as a therapist is to create a supportive environment for folks to explore their gender and sexuality. Perhaps you identify as queer, bisexual, lesbian, gay, pansexual, asexual, trans, nonbinary, agender, poly, kinky, something else, everything, and/or nothing at all. You deserve to have a space where you can learn more about the different parts of yourself without judgment. As a queer person who has sought out therapy myself, I know how challenging it can be to find an affirming therapist. Even if your identity isn’t central to your therapeutic goals, know that every part of you will be welcome in our work.

I believe that each person holds within themselves everything they need to heal and grow in the ways they would like. I see the therapist's role as being one in which provides an environment of safety and care where the client can explore themselves authentically. It is through this authentic exploration, that the therapist can help the client discover how patterns and ways of being are keeping the client stuck and resulting in suffering. By bringing into awareness these aspects, the client and therapist can then work collaboratively to release the pain and explore new ways of being.

Beginning therapy can be scary and is a bold step toward making proactive changes in your life. I provide a warm and relaxed atmosphere to explore your emotional life in a safe and supportive space. Aware of the importance of the body, I experience you as a whole person: your words, life themes, affect, posture, and your presence. By experiencing you in your wholeness, I can contextualize what can feel confusing or fragmentary. I can share what I see and understand, helping you raise your self-awareness. This process can harmonize your thoughts and emotions. Insight alone often is not sufficient for healing.

Sometimes things happen in our lives that change us in ways we couldn't predict. It might be a single event or an accumulation of experiences over time that rock our sense of stability and trust in ourselves, others, and our confidence to move through the world freely. It can feel like a never-ending battle to keep emotions in check while continuing to juggle all the complex demands of our lives. We end up feeling burnt-out, isolated, detached, and struggle with anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem as we attempt to manage these extremes on our own.

Are you unconventional in ways that makes finding a therapeutic fit hard? Need hyper-tailored sessions? Hi, I'm Locke! Whether you want to use sessions as executive function coaching, silent brainspotting, or cathartic chats, I'll aim to make it possible. Rationality-valuing, polyamorous, & LGBTQ+ neurodivergents with complex trauma report the most relief working with me, but my trauma treatment through individual and couple's counseling can benefit all. Survivors, especially those who don't wish to talk about their trauma, are as accommodated as those who do. Welcome, creatives, philosophers, and insomniacs needing flexibility!

Has a stressful or traumatic event left you feeling depleted, depressed, anxious, or disconnected from your loved ones? By getting lodged in our bodies, stress makes it very difficult to “just get over it,” or "move on." Moving forward and healing, however, is possible. Even by considering psychotherapy, you are making a very important first step towards regaining control of your life. Your choice to value your mental health is the key to getting back your feelings of agency, self-confidence, and sense of control of our own emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.

My passion and interest is in people, their stories, their struggles and their triumphs. This has led me to my mission to help people create the life they have always wanted. I passionately believe that the key of being a good therapist/counselor/coach/mentor is not to help people be something they’re not... but it’s to help people become more of who they really are!

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
