Your life journey as a gay person is full of unique joys and challenges. Most of us never learned how to be gay (and happy). I get it. But know this: you can create the life you want. You can find your chosen family, heal the past, overcome shame find your passion and learn to finally love yourself at any age. And you don't have to trek up this mountain alone. As a gay counselor, my passion is helping fellow gay people develop their own toolkits to overcome anxiety, heal and thrive. As a gay man I've tackled similar mountains in my life using Cognitive Behavior Therapy and tools that work. If you are ready, I'd be honored to help.

I am a licensed psychologist who has been in private practice for 38 years. You may be reluctant to consult a psychologist even though you feel overwhelmed and stressed. You might think that it is a weakness to talk to a professional about your situations or problems. Being willing to open up and share your concerns is an important step in finding solutions and is a sign of strength. You might benefit from realizing you are not alone and can be understood. Dr. Silke will be respectful of your spiritual/religious beliefs and will incorporate them into therapy as desired.

I am a licensed mental health counselor and graduate of Columbia University, and have been providing mental health services since 2006. My practice incorporates the client’s input and feedback, which in my experience is essential to achieving insight. I believe that the best therapy does not end with achieving insight, but should extend to helping my clients develop a practical plan for turning insight into action. My job isn’t complete until I have helped my clients foster the resilience and self-reliance necessary for managing daily challenges on their own.

Now Providing reduced fee and pro-bono therapy for those affected by the Lahaina Fires. Throughout our lives, we carry within us the voices, the gaze, acceptance or disapproval, the expectations, and the praise or criticism of those who have raised us and occupied our lives. Therapy can help us discover and clarify these powerful experiences and grow in our understanding of how they motivate us, giving us freedom to make more authentic decisions in our daily lives. I view therapy as an opportunity to heal, receive support, solve problems, improve relationships, and escape problems and patterns that seem to reappear over time.

As a psychotherapist, researcher, and expert in culture and identity conflicts, my therapy work starts with making space for your unique lived experiences, identities, and how you show up in your different worlds. Using a range of evidence-based therapy techniques including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, and psychodynamic therapy, I help my patients learn about themselves, explore the issues that have led to emotional distress, and teach healthy tools to manage the situations at hand. Therapy can involve exploring your past, present, and future challenges and pursuing an emotional growth to handle it all.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
