SUPPORT: Are you a spouse, partner, parent, child or friend of someone who has identified as transgender or nonbinary? When a person begins a gender transition, family and friends may also experience unknowns.
Are you are looking for a therapist you can connect with, who is sincere and interested in your experiences? You may want to try therapy, and need someone empathic to support you while gently encouraging you to find your authentic self. You may want your lived experiences with gender, sexuality, neurodiversity, and your uniqueness to be really seen and appreciated. It can feel scary to reach out to a therapist! I’m easy to talk with and hope you’ll feel comfortable reaching out. My passion is helping people who are transgender, nonbinary, or part of the LGBTQ+ community find their true selves and improve their lives in all aspects.

Working in many different mental health settings has allowed me to gain experience with clients of many different ages (ranging from children through the elderly), sexes (ranging from male to female, including transgender & non-binary), diagnoses, cultures, religions, etc. I am experienced with faith-based counseling & enjoy bringing spirituality, at the client’s request, into the therapeutic process. I offer many different modalities (i.e. solution-focused treatment, mindfulness, behavior modification, goal-setting, etc.) when working with clients and enjoy guiding clients along their pathway to healing & success.

I specialize in LGBTQIA+ issues & trauma, specifically gender identity and transgender issues.
My ideal client may present with a variety of issues, but ultimately they are motivated to seek change and implement strategies discussed in therapy while in-between sessions. They strive to be open and vulnerable in sessions and are looking to be an active and collaborative part of their therapeutic journey. I believe that we are all experts on our own experience, and a client who is willing to provide feedback on what is working and what isn't can assist in helping them tailor the therapy experience to their individual needs.

Cishet society got you down? Feeling that constant pressure to make yourself small. Often caught between crippling anxiety and debilitating depression. Struggling to find spaces where you can be real, maybe even within yourself.

My therapy style is open, compassionate, humorous when appropriate and educational while offering unbiased support. It is often times hard to find a therapist that you can connect with and feel that you can trust. I understand how difficult it can be sometimes to go to a stranger for help for things you may have never told anyone. My goal is to make my clients feel as comfortable as possible from day one with the therapeutic process in a professional environment. Whether you just need an unbiased ear or things have become unmanageable, counseling can create the life you want.

What would “I am enough” look like to you? If you imagined a happier, healthier quality of life with less pressure and more control, what would you see? The demands placed upon us can be overwhelming – even crippling – specifically for women. The process of coming into our authentic self can be complex and we can often find ourselves slipping into behaviors that are rooted in what others expect of us. Your authentic self is who you are at your deepest core. It is about being true to ALL of you, by aligning your thoughts, words and behaviors.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
